what is it about canadian barbers?
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:51:11 PM »
Hey guys.  I am a newcomer to canada, and have had a really hard time getting a barber to give me a really short buzzcut/burr cut.  I am
S  L  O  W  L  Y     making my way to being totally sly; but am trying to go gradually to the skin, with shorter and shorter buzzcuts.   The barbers here (small town in Sask prov.) do not seem to know what a "#2 "  or #1" means.  they just give me very conservative (i.e., not radically 'to the skin' ) buzzcuts .   Any of you canadian sly guys got any insights as to how to get the haircut I want . ?

Go sly and you won't have to worry about it anymore.    ;D

RazorX,

Touche' , my man!

Actually, you can use this to your advantage with the wife.  Take it all down the skin as close as you can with the clippers and blame it on the barber.  Say he cut your hair too short.  Then after a couple of days you can say that you kind of like it that way.  You'll be on the cusp of sly by then and it should be relatively easy to go all the way in the near future.

Man, you have a great since of logic

John, I know what you mean, and it isn't just Canadian barbers.  They're that way in Kansas, also.  I used to get so frustrated when I would go to get my hair cut.  I was mentally trying to work my way toward SLY by going shorter and shorter.  But the barber/stylist would never want to cut very much off.

I finally realized that I had to specifically state that "I was changing my hair style and I wanted to go significantly shorter".  From their perspective, I guess it was better not to cut too much off than to totally screw-up somebody's hair and not be able to put it back.

Finally, the last month before I went SLY, I decide this was crazy.  I was going to the barber every 2 weeks and the weren't cutting hardly anything off.   It was then I took matter into my own hands and just did the clippers myself.  It really wasn't very hard at that point, and I could control how much I took off.

It was actually less than a month of clipping on my own (and with help from this site) that I decided it was time to just take it all off.  A good pair of clippers is about the cost of a hair cut or two. :/O

From what has been said, I think if you are looking for an affordable option to do it yourself.  The first link is where it is listed in the Trimming area of SBG; the second a link to where you can find them, for how much, and possibly purchase one.  I would recommend just taking the final step and shaving down to the dome, but to each his own and I hope that these sites help.  L8r

I used to visit my barber every 2 weeks but then decided to take matters into my own hands.  It's a lot easier, not to mention cheaper.

Now I spend the money on shaving accessories. 8)

Hey SlyKC and MrClean; it's like you guys were reading my mind.  I've been thinking that the best thing is to just start doing it myself ... that Wahl peanut looks like the perfect solution.  and it would pay for itself after only 3 or 4 haircuts ....
Thanks again, Bros.

Hey JohnMont, that would be a great excuse to use on your wife.  I'm going to save money by doing it myself.  Then one day, 'oops, I put the wrong attachment on.  I might as well just shave it all off since I goofed.'
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Hey, I bought my own Wahl clippers and used to cut my own high and tight flat tops and crewcuts for a long time before I finally went slick.  It's hard to find a barber that gives a decent skinned high and tight flat top. I work with a fellow who does his own flat tops too.
