I did some experimenting and determined that the soap is the primary factor in the lather.

I lather on the the puck. I buy VHD or Williams most the time because I can get it anywhere and it is pretty good price. I have used some AOS cream and it lathers up nice but I go with basic soap and work up a good lather and go. I use a SR on my face and a DE on my head.
