Bad nick on back of head––how to avoid reopening it?
« on: December 17, 2012, 06:00:43 PM »
Hey guys,

Okay, so still new at shaving my head, got a question. I gave myself my first real cut of sorts on the back of my head a couple days ago. I put a finger on the spot to stop bleeding, which was bad at first, but it didn't hurt, so I wasn't too concerned. I put some neosporin on the back of my head on the spot that I had nicked and put some bandaids on it. I could get away with the bandaids because it was cold where I was and I could just wear a hat.

But shaving last night I re-opened the cut and it began bleeding again. Not as bad as the first time, but not good.

Do you guys have any techniques on how to keep shaving but avoid reopening this cut?

I stop using the DE in that area and go over it lightly with my electric.

Invest in a septic pencil....they sting like hell, but it speeds up the healing process. On average, it takes about 36-48 hours for a spot on my scalp to heal....but that could vary on the individual.

Interesting that I just dealt with this issue even after shaving for nearly 8 months. I suddenly caught a spot on top and it did not heal like most nicks. I took it easy and lightly went over it with the single blade side of my Fusion. It is finally healed- took about a week. Just go easy and hang in there. Your look suits you.

Let it heal before moving on. You probably don't want a massive scar!

Let it heal before the next shave and then start shaving with the grain.

Thanks guys! And yeah, let me put it this way..I don't want ANOTHER scar on my head.

The one I do have, on the back, was not from shaving, but an accident when I was a kid (my skull had to partially stitched back together, it was kind of nasty). The scar healed extremely well so that, with the sly look, it is completely unnoticable, which was originally a concern of mine about shaving my dome.

When I did have hair, it was a tiny bald spot on the back of my head that was unusually sensitive, and unnoticable because the surrounding hair was very thick. When I shave the back of my head, I have to be very careful not to irritate it, because it can send this raw/stinging pain through my head that is not comfortable!

I'm also still trying to learn the best technique to shave against the grain on the back of my dome. I might eventually invest in the Headblade (I was gifted with a bunch of good razors as a pre-Christmas gift from family, haha, so I want to use those up!).

Hey Ben, loving the new beard! I tend to use and electric for a day or two, I have a mole that periodically gets opened up, it's in a position which is hard to avoid, and the doctor says it would scar worse if removed. If it's a little nick, I just shave really lightly and put my finger on it with one hand while I shave with the other, so its impossible for me to go over it, but I get the surrounding area.

Also, try the Headblade, it makes shaving the back so much easier!

Hi,

I cut the tip of my ear today..Anyway, I would not shave the area for a few days or (if you do) go very light over it. Mine (although Diabetic) heal quickly.
