« on: December 16, 2012, 11:39:49 AM »
Would some or all of our members who are not citizens of the USA explain what kind of regulations your particular country has regarding buying and possessing firearms.? Thanks.

Here in the UK, since 1997, private ownership of guns is banned almost completely. The British police do not carry guns, except in special circumstances.

In 2011, in the UK there were 0.25 firearms deaths per 100,000 people. In the US, there were 9.00 firearms deaths per 100,000 people.

So in the US, you are 36 times more likely to be die from a firearms death that the UK.

In the UK, gun related incidents are virtually unheard of.

I still think British police should carry guns. It seems daft not to. It should be part of the training.

Six people are stabbed to death in the UK weekly. Ban all knives now.

Agree, I have always thought that.

Not sure if Stephen Waldorf would agree with you...

If the UK police all carried guns then that'd just make the bad guys track down one so they are at least on level terms.

I'm a UK resident and tbh I think we have the right idea, unless you have a very good and genuine reason to own one then you can't.

Oh man, gun control discussions are a can of worms...let's be careful to remain civil in spite of disagreements!

Yeah, it'd be nice to get a bit of healthy debate, it is a sensitive subject especially after recent events, but it is interesting to see how other countries work and view this subject.

So lets all play nice!!  >:D

Speaking of knives , those  quick open knives are outlawed in Alaska.

When there is such a terrible shooting with all the kids , getting killed there are alot of people that have to place the blame somewhere.  I kinda feel that people with mental problems and show signs should be watched closer.  If people want to do harm to others they will find a way.  Bombs, trucks, airplanes, rocks.

It is just all said.  But it is reality.

If a person as troubled and sick as this guy was wants to kill....................he'll find a way. Those guns were legally obtained by his mother. Perhaps mental illness should be looked into a little bit more. You cannot tell me that this kid was your normal 20 year old college student. Personal responsibility is pretty much given a long leash in the USA, and society pays the price all too often.

Agree 100%, that last large shootings have been a person that has showed they have mental problems.  You made a very true statement.   O0

This one is a hot potato guys. Keep it civil or it will be pulled.

I have a lot of thoughts on this one but will TRY to stay out of it. I will say this... what is right for the UK is definetly not right for the USA in my opinion.

That's a little cryptic Mike.  I mean of course the UK and US are different countries, but I'm not sure that means people should be allowed to carry guns.  Interested in hearing what your thoughts are anyway....

This may be a pivot point, those whose ideal is unlimited ownership of weapons must now confront the fact that a majority of Americans are ready for controls.
