HELP Big bump on the back of my head, is it normal?

After shaving my head I discovered a 1/2" diameter lump on the back of the middle of my head, just below being level with the tops of my ears. It's solid like bone and I discovered it by shaving over it and opening a pretty large cut. I don't seem to be able to shave it so I use an electric shaver for the lump. I thought it was my "bump of knowledge" but my wife say's only puppie dogs have them! I don't know if I'm posting in the correct section of the forum but I sure would like some help.

Could be a benign tumor, I had one on my neck.  Had the doc take it out in the office and it was the size of a egg.  Mainly a fatty tumor. They just pop up.  But would have it checked out.

I have a small bump in the same place. Mine is defiantly bone!

Yes, this does feel like bone, it does not squish or move.

I've got it. Makes it look no different at all. It isn't visible, for sure, it's rare when those are. I thought everyone had those. Regardless, it isn't an issue.

I believe that this is your occipital bone, which generally has a bump on it.  It's part of what makes the back of a shaved head look interesting and gives our shaved heads character.  Wikipedia describes it as: The occipital bone, a saucer-shaped membrane bone situated at the back and lower part of the cranium, is trapezoidal in shape and curved on itself. It is pierced by a large oval aperture, the foramen magnum, through which the cranial cavity communicates with the vertebral canal.

That bone was one of the things that kept me from buzzing or shaving my hair for so long.  In my mind, it felt like it was the size of a softball.  In reality, it was much, much smaller---and I worried for years over nothing.

The bump is called external occipital protuberance and it's a normal part of the occipital bone. Part of the trapezius muscle is attached to this "bump". Women have it less pronounced. I guess you can sleep calmly

It's totally normal... So don't go pounding it flat with a hammer... you could go blind...
