A Story..
« on: November 27, 2012, 01:02:24 PM »
I've been shaving my head on/off since the late 90's.  I always admired the look on other guys, and so thought I'd try it myself. At the time I had a full head of hair (I'm 50yrs  now), but shaved anyway. I didn't like it  because you could still see the pale shadow of it all (I have dk brown hair). So, then Ilooked into it & decided to epilate my head, purchasing an Epilator -and after reading many stories/articles on the subject for how to get rid of the shadow, decided this was the least expensive way of doing it (it gets rid of the shadow if you decide to keep it up). So, I did that sometimes everyday, sometimes once a week. I didn't do all of the head because it would be too painful. But the top & sides mostly. Using an Epilator isn't a painless process. In the meanwhile, I used a self-tanner on my head (which just ended-up making it look orange-ish). Anyway, I think I can safely say that my hair hasn't grown more than an inch in many years. Anyway after a few years, the epilation did help, long after I discontinued it, along w/nature -my hairline was receding naturally. So, I continued on/off sometimes shaving, letting it grow in to a buzzcut then shaving again. All I can say is that it's an urge deep inside you to be completely bald. I'm Type-1 Diabetic, have been since 13 -I, Jan. '11, and not handling my diet & partaking of beer & wine caught up w/me in the form of a Stroke which affected my right side & the right part of my body, I was first in a wheelchair then learned to walk w/a Walker. I still use a Walker to this day, though one on wheels that has a seat if I want to sit down & a storage pouch underneath. I cannot use my right hand for anything, the feeling is just not there.
So, I have learned to use my left hand (I'm right-handed) for everything, I still use my right -but not for anything major. But, I have learned to shave my face and yes, my head using my left hand. One has to be extra careful, but I'm glad that is one thing from the old 'me' that I haven't had to part with. So, head-shaving for me has definitely become part of my life.

Welcome Tom, great introduction.

Congratulations on adapting so you can maintain things which are important to you.

I hope you will participate regularly in the forums. Sometimes the young folk benefit from wisdom of the older Sly guys (I'm 50+ also).

Likewise, I've learned a lot from the youngsters.

Welcome to the group! Great to hear your story, I know exactly what you mean about the urge deep inside to be completely bald. Nothing like having and the feel of a completely smooth dome;)

A sincere thank you to everyone here. I've lost count on how many years its been since I first shaved my head -I know @ the time just a few guys were doing it, not like now..but when I think back it must be well over 10yrs since I first shaved my head; before that it was the Clippers.

Welcome to the family mate, thank you for sharing your story. Learning to use your left hand must have been quite a hurdle! Hopefully you didn't butcher yourself too much in the process.
