Seeing myself bald...
« on: November 11, 2012, 05:26:50 PM »
I saw a picture of myself for the first time since I started shaving.  We go to a small church, so we know everyone pretty well, but today at church, I saw this picture hanging on a bulletin board.  I had to look at it for a couple seconds to identify the people.   It was my father-in-law, out guest Pastor for that week, and then the mystery person...myself.  In my defense, it was taken from the side with my head turned.

OK, so I'll be "the guy" and ask "the question" ...

Mike, what did you think of the new person's appearance?

When I started shaving, I asked about the "gray" shade even right after shaving, and was told it was something only I would notice and not to worry about it.  In the picture, I didn't see the "gray" shade.  After getting over not knowing who was in the picture, I like my new look.  I'm no Vin Disel or Bruce Willis, but I'll keep it.  I guess a picture captures what you look like better than a mirror.

And the amazing thing is that in a month or two (or thereabouts), when you see yourself in the mirror you'll think you've always looked this way ... that's when you truly "own" it.

Funny how it works out hey! I've been sly for 5 months now, and while I can ID myself in a photo, I still have some WTF moments when I got to scratch my head and there is no hair, or try and run my fingers through my hair haha.... you'd think I would be used to it by now, but I seem to relapse every once in a while

I can remember seeing myself in store windows, mirrors, etc and not recognizing myself right away.

Give it a little more time and one day you'll be looking at a photo of your gleaming dome -- or standing in front of the mirror -- and it will be hard to imagine that hair ever grew there.

Man, I was looking thru our pix and I never noticed how much I wear my hat.  If I'm outside, I have a hat on.  But here is one of us at the Indy 500 where I had my hat off, this is also before shaved (obvious from the pix).

The first time I saw myself bald I got a shock. After the barber had buzzed my hair off I was ok with that as I was used to short haircuts, but BALD is totally different look. After my head was shaved smooth I hardly recognised myself at first & still after several weeks of having a smooth head I would have to have a second-take every time I saw myself. Eventually I got used to the shaved head & others did, too, but it was a dramatic change from having hair to no hair.

Been bald for nearly 10 months. So there's now plenty of 2012 summer holiday snaps and YouTube videos of the sly appearance. Really cant visualise myself with hair.

I've been sly for nearly 18 months, but my company ID badge shows me with hair and no goatee.  I look at that picture now and wonder "who is that guy?"

I admit that early on, I'd see my bald reflection and be startled, but after about a month I started forgetting how I looked with hair.  Now the ID picture looks strange and the bald reflection looks completely normal.

Still catch myself looking in windows whilst walking past them, seeing my reflection, then thinking...that is me!?
