You guys stay safe, prepare and pack in some supplies for the storm.  This is an excerpt from a blog this morning--

The winds... expected to be at or near hurricane strength at landfall... will spread inland for hundreds of miles either side of the storm center. It's hard to imagine how millions of people are not going to be without power for an extended period of time.

Widespread rainfall of 3 to 7 inches with some places getting a foot or more will cause extremely dangerous flash flooding.

And then there's the snow. Heavy wet snow is forecast for the mountains of West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania, mixed with rain at the lower elevations.

The winds will increase Sunday night in the Tidewater of Virginia and spread north through the day on Monday. The best guess right now is that the peak winds will come in overnight Monday night... near high tide and under a full, flooding moon. A triple whammy.

Thanks!  It was exactly a year ago this weekend that we were hit with a freak snowstorm that wreaked havoc and left us without power for nearly a week.  Everyone seems to be taking this seriously around here.  There have been lines at the gas stations, ATMs, etc.   Folks have been pulling in the outdoor stuff like furniture, Halloween decorations.

Be safe!

Gas up, get out the portable radio, Coleman stove and lanterns, get in wood for the fireplace, buckets, batteries, canned foods, beer 'n chips, fill jugs full of water and put them in the freezer, fill the bath tub, get a fresh shave...y'all know the hurricane drill. Hope the lights aren't out to long, be safe and good luck.

My girlfriends family packed it up and went to South Beach this weekend/early week.

I'm out in the Midwest for another 3 weeks. So luckily I miss the action!

Long ISland here....not on the water. We are not sure what's really coming but 75mph winds and 9 inches of rain over 2 days is the minimum.

The danger seems to be building--see Jeff Master's blog at: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/article.html

New Jersey seems to be the odds on favorite for landfall as a Cat 1 hurricane.  Our recent experience with Isaac, also a Cat 1, indicated that even at 75-80mph, winds can do serious damage.  If this storm continues to be a slow mover my experience with Isaac tells me that it is more nerve racking than a Cat 3 like Katrina when she hit but moving fast.  With Isaac the winds lasted more than 18 hours, Katrina was in and out in less than 7 at hurricane levels.  The flooding can be really bad.  A 50% chance of inundating a part of the NYC subway system is awesome.  The flooding threat is comparable to that of Katrina.

Bald Guys in the target area, get your game dome on and get ready.

Be safe out there, my NY brothers! I'll be back far after it's gone, thankfully, but really thinking about you guys there.

At least we don't have to worry about a bad hair day!

Subway system is shutting down today, I believe. The lady and her family are all in florida right now, but their return flights have all been changed/cancelled thus far. Her brother is actually flying BACK INTO NYC today, which I'm not sure why..I guess he feels work is more important than safety.

I've been tracking the storm on the NOAA site.  They currently show landfall in southern New Jersey, just above the Delaware River estuary.  My area (25 miles west of NYC) will get 4-6 inches of rain and see wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour if that happens.  Flooding will be a big problem - most of this area sits atop clay which absorbs water very slowly, so there will be a lot of runoff.

Most people are preparing for the bad weather.  It's now a waiting game.
