Using propecia with a shaved head
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:19:57 PM »
Hi guys,

I've been shaving for a year now (I'm 25), and while I like the bald look, I would like to grow my hair back out at some point. However, it's at a Norwood 5 right now, and it doesn't look good when I grow it back, and I can feel it thinning in the stubble that I get when I don't shave for a coupla days.

I was thinking of getting on propecia while still keeping the shaved head look for a while (if it works, I can grow my hair out, but if it doesn't I can quit it and continue to keep my head shaved). Has anyone tried this? I just want to know if it's a good plan.

Welcome Deets!

I'm bald by choice so I can't say that I know exactly what you're going through, I can only imagine.
If the shaved look is working for you, why go for propecia and other drugs?
We've had some threads about hair loss medication (check them out) and also do some research on the side effects.

Personally, I don't believe there's a cure for balding, other than the razor.
If there would be an efficient treatment then we wouldn't see balding people.

So, no to drugs.

By the way, have you tried the expensive anti-hair loss shampoos & repair treatments on the market? Any results?
I think nobody had any success fighting hair loss with that; but they are a good selling engine.

Do you really want to mess with Propecia?  Here is something Tyler wrote about the possible effects of using it!  Here is the link to it.  You might find it pretty sobering!

Let's see... nice, clean shaved head and a "little soldier" that still works.... OR..... MAYBE a little more hair, less money because you have to buy that stuff, and nights alone because women like "little soldiers" that work.

Gosh.... what would I choose?????????

I tried propecia,it did work well, but it also gave me less than rock hard erections. Skip it,keep shaving and forget that you have hair. Boners are better.

I find it ironic that guys take Propecia because they (mistakenly) think that more hair will make them attractive to women. Then they can't get it up...

Keep it shaved smooth.  I'd rather be bald than balding but the balding look, in your case nw 5.0, with some stubble shows the world that you accepted your masculinity trait with confidence.  Why would you want to screw up not only your masculine balding looks, but also your natural sex drive?  Do you honestly think at this stage of your genetic hairloss that it will actually grow back with drugs?  You might as well spend $3,000.00 for "scalp pigmentation" tattooing that is suppose to look like you have stubble on your bald head !

I get your idea, cuz i had similar thoughts.
But at a NW 5, i can't imagine that the result would be satisfying since it's not sure what the drug will do. Works different for everyone. And what means for a while, once stopping taking it hair and money will be gone. Due to the sideeffects I'm not sure if this would be worthy. You could always go and try and stop if its not OK, but it's maybe its better to put more energy in acceptance of the balding Head, finally getting over it, feeling free and just enjoying life.

Thanks for such prompt replies everyone! Thanks also for welcoming me to the forum.

I know that there's little hope of just propecia growing back my hair with a NW5 pattern (I still have hair on top, it's just thin and getting thinner every month I feel). However, my thinking was that I could at least retain what I have and maybe get a transplant in future. Until then, I can enjoy the shaved look.

As far as the sexual side effects are concerned, I totally get your points. But the two docs I've spoken to regarding this say that none of their patients have complained of it and they've prescribed it to hundreds of people. One of my friends is on it with no problems. That's not to discount all the stories that are out there -- they're scary I know. Nobody wants to ever have their sex drive go away, and I wouldn't wish that on myself or anyone else.

I guess it all comes down to how much you trust doctors and pharma companies at the end of the day. I really don't know the answer to that question -- and I feel like time's running out so I better make a decision -- should I just accept the shaved look for the rest of my life, or hold it out as something temporary (using propecia) until I can get a transplant in the future?
