Windows 8
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:32:05 PM »
Hello.
I've upgrade my OS from windows 7 to windows 8. It is indeed quite a major change...in a good way.
I always wanted to try macOS on my pc, but as I've read on the net, the transition is quite difficult... :)
Anyone else here using w8?

I went for Windows XP , to Window'7, and I am still learning about this. ;D  Let us know how it turns out.  I do have a guy that can change it for me if it is good.

Nope. It will probably be quite a long time before I do that upgrade. Don't see it as immediately necessary. Windows 7 handles everything I need, Windows-wise. That's just me, though.. Glad to hear you like it, Paul. How about some screen shots?

Anyone who wants to try an alternative OS, give Linux a try. Linux Mint is fantastic for beginners. Best of all, it's free.

I migrated from Windows XP to Suse Linux back in 2004, I think it was. Then to Ubuntu, and now Linux Mint.

Ubuntu, by default changed the desktop to something that 'lost' me. I was so crippled with the new desktop. Could not find anything. So switched to Linux Mint which retains a more traditional desktop that I understand.

I doubt I'll ever go back to Microsoft. Everything I need to do can be done in linux, and did the other fellow say that it was free no cost to try it out. no cost to upgrade. no cost for applications. Resistant to virus.

I think I'm going to install Win 8 on my desktop, since I generally only use it for podcasting and not my primary machine. My laptop, which is my workhorse, will be staying on Windows 7 until I see how well 8 plays with the software I use for work.

From what I've seen so far, though, I'm not impressed with 8.

I've considered upgrading, but I'd rather wait.

I still use XP and love it. When that is no longer supported I will swap to win7. I was watching a news article about microsoft and the launch of win8, They claim If win8 is not a big success it could sink microsoft all together. I doubt this is the case though.

It will be a success purely because it is microsoft... for most people the only other alternative is mac, which is becoming more popular these days, but I don't think it will ever be as big as windows

Tempted to buy a new machine with Win 8 pre-installed. Like the idea of a PC with a touchscreen monitor, for which Win 8 is designed.

Think I'll wait until the new year sales...

I used to run PC Linux OS several years ago and it was great. I'd like to go back to a Linus OS but I can't comprehend how to leave a Windoze partition. I have only one game on my computer and I simply refuse to not have it in working order. I tried installing an emulator called Wine but my game would not run and that just won't do! So for now I am stuck with 'Doze!

I need a couple of new laptops but I think I'll wait for "Black Friday".  That's not a long wait.

I got the $14.99 Windows 8 upgrade offer when I bought my laptop over the summer and installed it last week.  It's different to say the least, but I am getting used to it.  I'm not crazy about the new start menu and how it's laid out, but it does seem to boot up faster than Windows 7, which I really loved.
