The obsession just gets worse
« on: May 23, 2007, 07:31:48 PM »
I've been shaving regularly since November 2003 and during that time have occasionally gone as long as a week (but no more) without shaving.  I'd get the urge to grow my hair back and after a week it would always look so bad I'd end up shaving it again.

Nowadays I usually shave 6 days a week, most often skipping one day over the weekend.  This past weekend I didn't shave on Saturday or Sunday and by bedtime Sunday, I felt like I was going to go nuts if I didn't rid myself of the stubble.  I resisted the urge to shave Sunday night so I could stay smooth through Monday.   I could not wait to get the razor out on Monday morning.  After the razor had made one journey around my entire scalp, I felt for missed spots.  There were some and I could not believe the difference between freshly shaved and two days' growth.  How could I have stood all that stubble for an entire weekend?

Afterwards, it occurred to me that it's been a long time since I had one of those lapses where I wanted to grow my hair back.  I did go for about a week without shaving back in December because I was too sick with the flu to even think about it.  Other than that, I can't remember the last time that I went more than one day without shaving.   I think I may have finally gotten beyond wanting to have hair.  This site is a major factor in this change of mindset.  The fact that I'm within a stone's throw of complete MPB might have something to do with it as well.   >:D

Oh yes, the obsession has gotten MUCH worse.    ;D   There is no cure, no road back.  Nothing to be done now but enjoy the slyness.   8) 8)

RazorX,  Thanks to the encouragement of you and all the others on this site, today marks my 1 month anniversary of being completely SLY.  I took the advice and prevailing wisdom of the many that have said that you need to give it a full month to really give the Sly experience a chance.  To accomplish this I've made sure to shave a least once a day (and many days I would reach for the razor after getting home from work to try to get rid of any 5 o'clock shadow that had set in).

While I don't have any urge to revert to my old styling (or lack there of) I think I need to at least cut back to 6 days a week to give my scalp and the razor a rest.  I'm going to try changing my routine this holiday weekend.  While this may not seem like a big change, I'm wondering if the stubble will drive me crazy. Even if it's only for a day.  (Can you tell that I can be a little anal about some things?)

I'm with you two. I may skip a day, but no more than that.

Although my wife is not on board with my joining the SLY Movement, she does like the fact that I shave the face whenever I shave the dome. Prior to going sly, I'd let the beard go for days on end. Now, I'm dedicated to keeping it as smooth as possible.

C'mon, whoever heard of an anal CPA? ;D ;D

I sort of settled into the 6-days-a-week regimen by happenstance.  I usually try to get some work done around the house on Saturday mornings and don't shower until later in the day.  Then I'm not quite ready to shave again by Sunday morning and let it go until Monday.

I have found that skipping the shave to give my skin a chance to "rest" actually makes things worse.  That is when I tend to break out in bumps.  I really don't have a lot of hair on top, but I don't have any slick bald spots, just a thin coating.  You can't even really see the hair, but when I go a day or two without shaving, when I look in the bathroom mirror, I can see all sorts of little bumps appearing where the stubble is re-emerging.  Shaving again makes things a little better, but they usually take a day or two to disappear completely.  I don't know if that's a common problem or not.

My wife also would complain if I ever started letting the beard go (at all).  She always would say that she liked the "SMOOTH" look.

Needless to say, those words have come back to haunt her... >:D

I'll bet if you were to let your hair grow out for 4 or 5 days, she would suddenly realize how much better you look completely sly.

I've actually thought about doing that, but I'm enjoying my new look to much. I've barked at her a few times when she's said something even remotely derogatory telling her, "I know you don't like this look. You told me MANY times. But I like it, so get used to it". FYI, that's not just dudes talk, I actually said that. Since then, she's been pretty quiet about the look.

Besides, now that the weather is getting warmer, I want to keep it as sly as possible.

Good for you for standing your ground.  Many a sly dome has succumbed to the objections of a spouse.  Glad to know that yours isn't going to be one of them.

Nope, the Schro Dome is here to stay.

To use some liberal, politically correct-speak,
My wife doesn't nag, she becomes "verbally repetitive".

Keeping the noggin completely smooth is an obsession! Shaving in the morning seems routine, but at the same time, it's a ritual that makes me feel good and relaxed.

I may skip shaving once mid-week and on Sunday. I can't skip two days in a row. I have a similar experiece as RazorX. I skip 2 days and shave, then i have a reaction. Fortunately for me it's some redness. No-ingrown hairs. But it's nice to give the scalp a break. If I shave twice a day...i may get razor rash.

What's funny is that, I'm so use to being Sly that when I do skip a day, i feel grubby. The same kind of grubby when i skip shaving the beard.

Keep it sly.

Same for me!  Though, I can let the face grow out a bit and not feel as grubby as if I don't shave my head for a day.

There is no doubt its become an obsession for me.  By late afternoon I'm feeling the dome and start to get annoyed when I feel the start of any stubble.  I let it go for two days once after being attacked by my HeadBlade...but then needed to go out and couldn't stand the thought of being seen with a dome that was anything but totally smooth.  Given it some thought and have figured out this obsession is a virus I contracted from BaldAndre :*))  Glad I caught it though!

I too have become obsessive with shaving... up until a few months ago, I was always an every-other-day shaver (except for Friday and Saturdays when I'd shave every day).

However, now I am a six-day shaver, typically only skipping one day, which varies, per week...
