New bald guy here
« on: September 19, 2012, 06:58:19 PM »
Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as I may be contributing to the forums, at least with lots of questions for now. I'm 58 and after a few years of being sort of halfway there and wanting to do it, I finally took the plunge and had my barber shave my head on Monday and so far I'm loving it. I've read a few forum posts about the "best" way to approach keeping it smooth, but I'm sure everyone has their own way and I'll have to figure out mine. I purchased a Panasonic wet/dry shaver so I could keep it clean while I'm showering in the AM, but I'm wondering if I can really expect it to be super smooth (which I would like with no little stubble) or does a shaved bald guy just have to deal with that on a daily basis?

Welcome to the forum, Angus. I'm one of the Panasonic users and I love it for daily use and quickness. But it is far from a good shower shave with cold steel. Today I wet shaved the face and lathered up the gourd with Bald Guyz gel and Proroso shave cream with a brush and used the Panny...when I gave it a "QC" inspection I wasn't satisfied so I lathered up and went over it with a Derby DE blade...that passed inspection. Hope you enjoy the ride...good luck.

Welcome Angus. I know that there are a lot of Pani fans on here. Maybe one of them could chime in on this. My thoughts are that while an electric may get you a great shave, a blade shave, be it a cartridge or DE razor will get you an even closer shave.

Enjoy the forum!!!

Welcome Angus ... you're in good company here (says this 57 year-old).

You're right that everyone must find what works best for them. I've never used an electric shaver so have no point of reference on that.

But I look forward to the daily wet shave (using a HeadBlade). The daily ritual of restoring a BBS (Baby Butt Smooth) finish is one part of the foundation which supports the rest of my day. Just a matter of perspective.

Stick around. Ask questions. Tell of your discoveries and experiences. The guys (and occasional gal) around here are quite awesome. Glad you are among us.

Welcome, Angus.

I'm not an electric razor user either, but I'm sure you'll find answers to almost all your questions here in the forums.

Welcome Angus, good to have you join us. I am not an electric shaver user or a fan of them, but there are plenty of bro's here who are. They can help you with any questions you may have.
I am however, a big fan of the blade shave, and nothing will get you as smooth, imo.
I suggest giving a blade shave a try, and one of the best you can use for a first time shave is either the Mach III or the Fusion proglide. From there you can decide if you want to continue with a regular stick razor, or go with the electric.
Good luck with your decision, and let us know how it goes.

Welcome Angus!
I'm one of those guys who enjoys the experience of a razor shave.
Never tried a shaver, but as long as it works for you it's great.

Thanks for the votes of confidence and welcomes. I've been using the electric only because I've been nervous about puttiing a blade to my head but this morning, I tried a Gillette Fusion Proglide with Headslick and WOW what a difference. Absolutely smooth head! I love it! I have a feeling I'll use some combination of the two ongoing only because the Panasonic is easier and makes me less nervous but the blade definitely gives me the smoothness I'm looking for. Guess I'll figure it out over time. I wish I did this a long time ago!

Yes, Eric has been my barber for about a year now. Opens at 7 AM on Mon -Wed. Works out great for me as he's about 5 minutes from where I work. He was a bit surprised at the different from usual cut but for $10 he did a great job. Only problem is now that I'm doing the maintenance myself, I doubt I'll be seeing him again :)

Just noticed on another post the acronyms WTG and ATG. What do those mean?

Just noticed on another post the acronyms WTG and ATG. What do those mean?

The direction you shave in relation to hair growth.

WTG - With the grain.

ATG - Against the grain.
