To the youngsters of the forum
« on: May 22, 2007, 12:56:07 PM »
I know there are a few maybe more people around my age on this forum and 1 or 2 below(the young chef comes to mind) and I just want to pick your brains

I was wondering why you went sly?  Was it because you felt it looked better
 or
That you were loosing your hair and felt it looked alot better?

Did you feel it was a big step going sly? Im finding it kind of hard to make the jump

Please no added pressure as I am going to buzz my head for the first time this weekend, I dont know how long till I go sly

hey,

So im 20 and have been sly now for over a month....

The reason i went sly: well i was losing my hair pretty noticably and wanted to somehow stop that. I never believed in those remedies that promised to grow hair back, because I know that such a remedy does not exist. I was thinkin about shaving it all off for a while, or at least trimming it down, but never really got the balls...

the dating scene got harder and harder for me as girls would shy away from the balding and the "whoa what is a 30 yr old doing here"....everyone told me i looked like I was in my thirties...

so one day, after seeing some guys who were sly, I decided to just do it....looking back on it now im surprised because there was no thought process involved. I just did it....than i went online and did the research on how to do it properly and found this site... so for me it was totally a whim...

but to be honest, it was a whim that felt right....its hard to explain but I didnt do it to gain confidence, to look better, or any of those positives that im feeling now. I just felt like i had to do it.
But now I do feel those positives...

I remember that second night after i shaved it, i was on this site and reading how everyone talks about more confidence, a better feeling, etc. I felt like it was great motivation but frankly some grade-a bullshit. Let me tell you I was completely WRONG....these guys were absoluty right! (i apologize now for thinkin otherwise) about a week to two weeks in, I felt as if there was a complete new person within me. I DID feel more confidence, i felt better, i thought i looked better. And the dating scene improved for me like night and day.

Now, i did get the people who were completely against the look. I had the jokes, the laughs, the "OMG's" but after the first few weeks they really got used to it and some people came to me afterwards, apologized, and asked me what im doing that weekend.  >:D  ^-^

Right now, my whole family supports me and likes it, (i even have an uncle that is thinkin about following) and most of my friends supporting it. Those that arent, well they have their own problems. Also, I had a very very positive reaction at school, such a positive one that one of the professor's is thinkin about it as well....(i recommended the site)

Now, thinkin back on it, It is a very big step. A very hard step that Im sure if i thought about it more, I would have not done it when I did. So im glad I turned off my brain from thinkin about the what-if's and instead just went for it.
After you shave, the first few days you will have regrets. I REALLY regreted the decision. I thought my shaved head looked horrible. It was misshaped, to white, bumpy, etc. It was all in my mind tho. No one else thought those thoughts except me. Now i dont regret it. At ALL....

Hope this helped you somehow....i know i was just going off on tangents....

Pick my brain all you want so I can hopefully help you more!

Sticks that is an awesome reply, cheers.

I think Ill do it in stages. Ive started getting the comments that Ive aged alot while Ive been doing my current job, everyone says I look 27ish rather than 23(my actual age). I hate that, it makes me feel like a right t$%t to be told I look 5 or 6 years older.  Plus I think you may be right, the dating scene does get harder if you are losing your hair not only that some girls are put off but you suffer dips in confidence, maybe made harder by people saying "oh your going bald!" or "your losing your hair".  But on the other side I am a fairly naturally confident person especially compared to people my age as Im quite comfortable with myself on the whole and have always been at ease talking to anyone(probably inherited from my dad)

So it really has got to be this weekend that I buzz it, Im just abit obsessive about things staying the same or changing, it kind of frightens me!! But like I said I will do it so I will!!!(hear me psyching myself up in a forum post, LOL).

Also a thing that helped me move towards the buzzing/shaving is that my natural weight has creeped up from about 10st7lbs to 11st7lbs so I think I look alot better. Though Im trying to put another stone on, but not compromise my low body fat.

Ive been on this board for about a month or 2 and Im only just about to buzz my head!!!

BTW sticks I read your introduction and sly is definately a better look for you, not only over thinning hair but it really suits you.

p.s. I am taking my parents to the airport this sunday and Im planning on buzzing my head on Friday night after a few beers round at my mates, so that might be abit of a situation but I think its time I sat down and talked to my parents more, they always want to know about my private life but Ive told them very little as I dont feel at ease. Plus its not like its unexpected as Ive always been the wayward son.

Sorry about the rambling but I genuinley say whats on my mind most of the time

I shaved at 25, but wish I would have earlier in life.  I would say more, but I think Leo nailed it!

These are the same questions that everybody asks, regardless of age.  The whole age thing is a sliding scale.  When you're 25, you don't want to look 30, and when you're 35 you don't want to look 40, and so on.   Thinning and receding hair is very aging.  Shaving it off erases that.  It's that simple.

Just askin'  :)  I don't think you'll be able to hold out forever.  I think it's almost as hard to give up the facial hair as it would be to give up the sly dome.  But that's just me.   8) O:O

No worries dude....giving it up...I think that is why I'm so stoked this time...I always had the facial hair as a crutch in the looks factor...I always thought i looked better with somethin'....maybe the case, but this time i wasn't as affected by shaving it all off like the previous times...

kinda liberating...sounds like a familiar theme, huh? ;)

Please provide the contact information for your friends so we can instruct them on what they need to do once you are good and liquored up.   >:D >:D

As I think I told you before, I felt exactly the same way you do before I took the plunge, so take it from someone who knows -- I waited far too long to take the plunge.  You really need to stop torturing yourself and do it.  It's the only way.  Once you get the notion in your head to go sly, there is no peace until you do it.  Once it's done, you feel a whole lot better.  Get your friends to do it for you if that's what it takes to get there.
