Confessions of a former Great Hair Guy

Great Hair Guy was a 20-year-old college student.  He was very proud of his hair, which was by far his best feature, and he spent a considerable amount of time and money ensuring that it always looked its very best.  It was thick and brown and the kind of hair that was easy to style in a variety of ways without too much effort.  Great Hair Guy took a lot of ribbing from his friends for being so vain about his hair, but he did not care.  They were just jealous.

One February day, Great Hair Guy’s fraternity brothers decided to participate in a St. Baldrick’s event to help raise money for childhood cancer.  Naturally, Great Hair Guy did not want to have his head shaved but it was for a good cause, and he did not want to be the only one not participating, so he reluctantly agreed.  Great Hair Guy’s fraternity brothers made him go first, so there would be no opportunity to back out.   Great Hair Guy steeled his courage with a few drinks beforehand, and to be honest, the whole thing was rather a blur.  After the event was over he and his fraternity brothers went home and finished the job with lather and razors.  They made a pact that they would keep their heads shaved until the end of the semester. 

At first, Great Hair Guy, now Shaved Shiny Bald Guy, was a little freaked out.  He missed his hair and did not like being bald.  His family and friends found the whole thing quite amusing, particularly his Bald Uncle Charlie, who had been sporting a horseshoe hairstyle for many years.  After a week or so,  Shaved Shiny Bald Guy resigned himself to the fact that he was stuck with this bald head for the next three months, like it or not and decided to make the best of it and perhaps even have a little fun with.  After a while being bald wasn’t so bad.  Of course it helped that he was surrounded by a group of other guys who were in the same boat.

Nevertheless, it was a relief when the end of the semester rolled around and it was time to stop shaving.  Shaved Shiny Bald Guy was more than ready to get his hair back and resume being Great Hair Guy.  It would likely take all summer.  It was at that time that Bald Uncle Charlie approached him with a proposition:  if he would remain Shaved Shiny Bald Guy for the rest of the summer, until Labor Day, Bald Uncle Charlie would make a substantial contribution to St. Baldrick’s.   It meant nearly four more months of baldness, but in all good conscience, Shaved Shiny Bald Guy could not refuse.  Great Hair Guy would have to wait a while longer to stage his comeback.
Shaved Shiny Bald Guy kept his end of the bargain and faithfully kept his head shaved every day for the entire summer.  He was almost beginning to forget what it was like to have  hair.  Bald Uncle Charlie also kept his word and made the donation to St. Baldrick’s.  As Shaved Shiny Bald Guy ran the razor over his dome one last time, he thought that part of him might actually miss this daily ritual, but mostly he just wanted his hair back.

A few days later, Shaved Shiny Bald Guy was back on campus as Buzzcut Guy, with stubble on his scalp. It felt like sandpaper at first, and then like Velcro and did not grow in as evenly as he’d expected.  After a week, it seemed like the stubble was fairly thick on the sides of his head, but there was still a lot of scalp showing on top.  Not to worry, it would all fill in in due time.

 Or would it? After a month, the hair on the sides of his head still seemed thicker than the top.  The hair on his forehead still seemed thin, and so did the crown area, but it probably just needed a little more time to grow in properly.  He needed a haircut as he was starting to look Bozo the Clownish.  He instructed the barber to trim the hair on the sides but to leave the top alone.  The top did finally begin to fill in a little, but it seemed much more sparse than it had been originally.  If he’d known it would take this long to grow back, he would never have agreed to shave his head.  His fraternity brothers had all grown their hair back over the summer. Buzzcut Guy was the only one still struggling to get his hair back to normal. 

The following month he went back to the barber and asked him to buzz the sides of his head as close as possible, to make the hair on top look more full while it continued to grow in.  This, he figured, would give it a chance to catch up.  There was a moment of awkward silence before the barber finally spoke.  He didn’t think the plan would work.  He told Buzzcut Guy that he was going bald and showed him the top of his head in the mirror, which revealed a spot on the crown that was covered with a coating of hair, but under the bright lights looked completely bald.  Buzzcut Guy’s stomach felt sick. This just wasn’t possible.  Nobody in the family was bald except Bald Uncle Charlie.  Besides, nobody went bald in seven months.  Not at age 21.  He asked the barber to buzz the sides of his head.  He paid him and left the shop.

From that point on, he obsessively checked the top of his head in the mirror several times a day. He thought the sparse spot was starting to fill in, but at other times he wasn’t so sure.  Finally he asked one of his fraternity brothers, one he felt would not laugh at him, if he looked as though her were going bald.  The reply was affirmative.  Great Hair Guy was now MPB Guy.

MPB Guy mourned for the next few days.  It sucked being MPB Guy.  A few people suggested that he shave his head again and become Shaved Shiny Bald Guy again.  He didn’t want to be Shaved Shiny Bald Guy, certainly not for the rest of his life.  But in the end, it was either that or remain MPB Guy in perpetuity.  And the latter was certainly not an attractive option.  So out came the clippers, followed by the razor and shaving cream.  And with each stroke of the razor, MPB Guy gradually disappeared and was replaced once again by Shaved Shiny Bald Guy. 
A year came and went, but he remained Shaved Shiny Bald Guy and eventually learned to accept it. Most people have forgotten all about Great Hair Guy, but Shaved Shiny Bald Guy still thinks of him and on occasion he even misses him but not as frequently as he used to.

Welcome, bud! Great introduction...or should I say story! We know that SSBG still reminisces about GHG in the younger days, but hang around here and we can actually help SSBG enjoy being SSBG and forget about being GHG ...or MPBG for that matter.

Welcome!  You have a great story to tell. First, you should feel good about the contributions you raised for the St Baldrick Foundation.  It's a great cause. Second, the humor and good nature evident in your story indicate that have the situation under control. Third, there are many young guys who have MPB, so you aren't alone.  Fourth, the fellowship on this site is great, so join in.

I'm going to take a guess that Shiny Bald Guy also learned that he has WAY more redeeming qualiteis than that simple head of hair he used to sport. No more wasted time keeping perfect hair means more time for enjoying life!

Great introduction, and a familiar story for many of us, occasionally sir shines-a-lot reminisces about his hair, but then realises it was pretty bad towards the end, and loves his shiny head even more. Great to have you with us, always cool to have another young guy join.
