So, today I go for a family meal for my Dad's birthday. My family have seen the buzz cut lots, in fact my younger brother and Dad sport the same look.

Anyway, it was WAY too hot in the restaurant to keep my cap on, so I ditched it (Yay for me!)

To cut a long story short, my brother pointed out that he had never realised before how tiny and elf like my ears are!! Cue the family all looking at said appendages.."Fairy Ears" "Hippo Ears"

Never expected THAT!

my family have never had an issue, thankfully. It seems to be people I haven't seen for a while (that never knew how bad I was receeding) that always seem to have the problem.

Hey, family is family. One does not get to choose his/her family. They might get you some hard times, but they are still yours.
If you would have had a problem with the ears they would have made fun of that long time ago or they would have never picked on you because of that.
IMO they were just having fun, unfortunately for you it was fun only for them and not for you too.
Maybe next time if they do the same you could either tell a joke about ears, make fun and move on or tell them they make you uncomfortable or you can always find another way to change the subject.
