i have chosen my road...

i started losing my hair in earnest at age 25 --the year i got married. coinidence? you tell me. anyway, i have always, always , always been self-conscious about it. in fact, until recently i wouldn't leave the house without a baseball cap. i've shaved a time or two, but have always second guessed myself---is my head too big? is it shaped alright? what about that damned shadow? it finally dawned on me as my midlife crisis was reaching DEFCON 1, my hair is gone and there's nothing i can do about it. nothing that looks good anyway. hairclub? don't think so. A: i can see a hairclub haircut 20 miles away, and B: i'm not that vain (or maybe i'm just cheap). so, i decided "screw it", i'm lettin' her rip. and so i did. i am now as bald as i can be, and loving it. the wife isn't sure yet, but i think she'll come around.
i have recently been going everywhere sans hat and i have to admit, it's very liberating. i haven't had any reactions from people though. i know that when i go in public people look, but you have to realize that i dress out about the size of your average NFL lineman--i'm 6' tall, tip the scales at around 3-hundo and i wear a 58 long suit jacket. i think in my particular case, shaving does make me more intimidating--which is a double edged sword in today's society, but i secretly find it hilarious.
anyway, i just wanted to post and introduce myself. i'm glad to be here.

Post a pic bro, we'll tell you the truth! Seriously, part of being SLY is being confident in who you are!
There will always be people who do not like bald... but hey, I do not like skinny! SO WHAT! Thet's just my opinion.
What you think about yourself is what you will project to others. Be bold, be SLY!

Welcome! Going sly is a liberating feeling when you've been battling MPB (been there, done that).
I experienced the exact same thing as far as going from wearing baseball hats all the time to going without one after shaving for the first time. It's pretty cool.
Cheers!

i feel as though i've joined some sort of support group or twelve-step program. "hi, i'm steve and i have alopecia".
i look at it this way... if i have a rim of hair (the MPB horseshoe), i'm just some bald guy. BUT, if i shave it off i'm making a fashion statement---AND previously unbeknownst to me, i am also SLY. so its a win-win situation really.
you guys don't realize (well, maybe you do) i couldn't even say the word "bald" before. bald is something your dad is, not a hip, young go-getter like me. i might have been "losing my hair" (even though you can see your reflection in my head), but never the "b" word.
now that i have skinned my dome i wear the look not only with pride and satisfaction, but with an almost defiant bravado. yeah, i'm bald...what of it?
now if i could just figure out what to do with 100 baseball hats.

That's a funny problem to have, huh? I guess you could always donate them to the Salvation Army or Goodwill or something. Just keep a couple in case you're going to be in the sun.

I love being called baldy. Think of how many guys are horrified to hear that word!

Notorious, Great story. Really glad you found us here and have made the very "positive" SLY move.
I really relate to what you said about the "B" word. Before, I would never talk about myself as being bald, even though everyone else probably did.
Now, I wear it with pride and BALD is no longer a 4 letter word (if you know what I mean....)
