Day 100 and celebrating
« on: August 10, 2012, 07:13:54 AM »
Today a hundred days have passed since I first took razor to head.  I think a celebratory post is in order.

What have I learned these past 100 days?

I have realized that the thin hair I cultivated for so many years with hair gel, peroxide, crew cuts and barber trips does not make the person I am.

A confidence that I never knew was there has been forged.  Where this confidence comes from is hard to describe.  I guess it is akin to a person who is obese or disabled.  He or she realises that they are not physically attractive so they make up for this by adopting a happy personality.  However, I am more fortunate, I have grown to actually like my slick skull very much.

I became part of a forum of awesome men, many who once experienced the fear of losing hair.  Men who were paralyzed at the thought of ever taking it all off.  Men who awoke to the fact that by taking a simple bold step, fear can be turned into peace of mind.  Men who are here to share, to encourage those who find themselves in the same position as they were in at one stage. Now I am that man, one who can say to another, “I have been there, I hated my thin hair all my life, and there is something that can be done to remedy this.

I have a renewed sense of purpose.  There is nothing like helping out a fellow human being, even if it is mere encouragement.  I seriously want to see a world free of the stigma of “a shaved head” as much as homosexuality and disease like depression should be de stigmatised.  I have the power to make that contribution.

I learned so much about the “art of shaving”.  From a man who used to squirt some foam on his face,  draw a cartridge over the skin and hope for the best, to a one who now considers shaving a “hobby” and actually enjoys the “my time” part of shaving.

Today I celebrate my smooth dome, my new attitude, my new lifestyle.  I encourage all those who think that they can never pull off the bald look because of their ears, their head shape or whatever reason. I was also there. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I will ever go Sly.

How wrong I was.

Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

It's been an awesome journey - not yet concluded. Thanks for bringing us along.

Congratulations Waine.  Your contributions (600+ posts in 100 days!!) to the site have been full of wisdom and most supportive for lots of members.

I've just passed 2920 days (ie 8 years) of being sly and I can assure you that the feeling of freedom and confidence keeps getting stronger and stronger.  All those 'fears' of what others would think are a distant memory and I think if I ever tried to grow my hair back (if any existed) people would say 'what on earth are you doing".

I'll have a celebratory drink too.  A good Aussie red of course.
