Western manufacturing
« on: August 08, 2012, 10:22:41 AM »
Is this just a lack of UK manufacturing or does it spread across Europe and USA?
I've lost loads of weight (not intentionally, but that's another story) and needed to get some new clothes.  I've just got a bonus so thought I'd splash some cash.
I went to a British department store, in a city in Britain.
I bought 2 ties, the store's own brand
I bought 2 shirts, by British desginers
I bought 2 suits, by British designers

The ties and shirts were made in China and the suits in Egypt.
Don't we make anything of our own anymore?

I was pondering this as I drove into the office in my American made car.

That's happening all over. We see it here in the U.S. as well. There's still some manufacturing here, of course, but not as much as there could/should be.

We live in a global economy now, so even if you have a "Made in Country X" label, there is a good chance the materials are actually from another country.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

These days you need to seek out domestically-made goods if you want them.  Electronics - forget it.  Some of the large appliances are still made states-side, and of course some cars / trucks are (though, as Tyler noted, even if assembled in the US, that doesn't mean much regarding the source of parts).

I really try to buy my large purchases from companies who manufacture them in the U.S. - cars, large appliances, suits, other dress clothes, even shoes (Allen Edmonds / Alden are still made in USA, New Balance makes one running shoe model here I believe).  The reality is that it costs more for most purchases, because the labor cost is higher.  Each consumer needs to decide whether it's worth it to them.

They just had a huge blow-up when the US Olympic team's uniforms were designed in America--that's okay--but manufactured in China--somehow there's irony there with the competition for Olympic "gold" but I'm not sure it's that apparent who really won the gold! :D

But, at another level, everyone going totally for "home grown" product will only exacerbate the serious economic situation that the Euro Zone is in, and where the US will be headed if the "fiscal cliff" isn't addressed adequately by everyone in our Congress.

Any possibility that the 'made in China' label is a fake?

Doesn't everyone want things that are made in China?  Certainly someone out there must be faking China goods.

(Ah, yes. Tongue in cheek here).
