FNG From Ohio
« on: July 22, 2012, 06:39:19 PM »
So, name is Andy. I'm from Ohio. 24 years old.

I've been buzzing my hair (even shaved it once) for a few months now. I've been receding since I could remember, but it never really bothered me until I got out of high school.

I've been and still am very self-conscious about my lack of hair so I still wear a hat outside of the house. I found this forum to hopefully gain some confidence and start losing the hat and take pride in my baldness.

I'll get some pictures up soon of me embracing my baldness. :)

I do it because I can, I can because I want to, I want to because you said I couldn't.

Hey Andy! Welcome to SBG.

I'm also 24 and I used to be in the same situation as you are right now. A lot of us have been there and we all overcame our fears related to hair loss, most of us by shaving it off completely. It's a normal process and remember you're not the only one (even though it looks like it sometimes).

The guys over here are great and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Another welcome to you Andy.

Once you shave it off you'll have such a sense of relief you will be disappointed you didn't do it long ago. The shaved look is very much in style now (for all ages) and so easy to live with.

You just have to get used to seeing yourself differently.

How short are you buzzing it? You should post a picture...I'm sure you look great.

I was (and still am, in certain respects) in your shoes. I never went out without a hat, and it was my crutch to stand on. I slowly started wearing hats left (although I usually take one with me to protect myself rom the sun), and realized that no one cares or knows the difference.

I suggest buzzing/shaving your hair, and then, for one day, go somewhere without your hat. Make it a weekend where you can relax, be around some new people/strangers, and just do your thing. Slather on some sunscreen, walk out with a smile, and you'll realize people will embrace the new you. 99% of people won't care what you look like, and the 1% that does are just insecure about themselves.

Good luck!

Hello Andy

A big welcome. Some good advice and encouragement going around here. Take it step by step, and it will work out. You will be surprised at how much you may just like it, and even more surprised at how few people will react negatively.

All the best...

Welcome, Andy! It's perfectly understandable to feel "naked, or "exposed" when you take all of your hair off. It's a big change.
I think JasonR gave you some great advice. If you don't think you can just throw the hat aside and dive into public baldness, start small. Take the hat off in some public places you don't frequent often. Work your way closer to home and for longer periods. There's no good reason you can't do this, dude. Best of luck to you!  O0
