IF you use a shaving brush...show us your lather
« on: July 19, 2012, 08:53:55 AM »
Hello fellow chrome domes...Hope all is well with U and your families.  If you use a brush...show us your lather.

I always use a brush.  Here is lather with my Semogue 620 and Mike's Natural Soap.

Hey fellow chrome domes... if U do not wish to post up your lathers.   Just wanted to know if U use a shaving brush in your routine.  I rotate two brushes.  My cheapo Moisture Shea Badger Brush from Target  and my go to brush the Semogue 620.

I get better shaves if I use a brush.  So... how 'bout U?  Do you use a shaving brush?  If so what  kind?  If not do you plan on using one soon?  What's your story?

I have two shaving brushes...the first one came with VHD shaving soap and that's the one I use the most...The second one came as a bonus gift with the box of Bump Patrol I bought. Both of these were purchased at Wally World. The brush that was a bonus gift from the Bump Patrol box has hard bristles and doesn't spread the soap around like I like it. However that brush may be designed to use only with the Bump Patrol. That said, the only time I don't use a brush is if I'm doing a quick touch-up from a shave that is less than three days old and I'm on the go.

Mr Slybear, far be it from me to be critical, but I'd like to politely suggest your lather looks a little thin.  Either too much water or not enough product (or even not enough time spent building the lather) is usually the cause.

Look at the difference between your lather and Warhawk's in the first picture above for what you're aiming for.

@Sirhappy...awesome pic!

Enclosed is a pic with the $1.49 Williams Shaving Soap.  Not bad for only $1.49 :)

Can I ask what the benefits are to using traditional shaving soap rather than using canned shaving foam? Thanks  O0

Pretty much everything about shaving soap/cream is better than canned foam or gel.  Soaps and creams typically use less ingredients and more natural ones, they have better lubricating qualities, the razor glides more easily, they can last much longer, they're usually less expensive (the initial cost may be greater but the product lasts longer), when using a brush to apply your lather you make the hairs stand up straight for a closer shave, and they come in a variety of incredible scents.

The canned foams are mostly air and so they provide less lubrication and mositurizing.  Canned gels are a little better.  Creams and soaps give a rich lather and can be remoistened as you shave, so they give a much smoother, less irritating shave.

In my 28 years of shaving I have used almost all the available brands of canned foams and gels here in SA. Over the years my cartridge  shaves were rushed and boring.  I don't mean to offend anyone who uses this product when I referred to it as "canned goo". Over the past year  I went over to the wet shaving method. Being Sly for 82 days, having researched shaving extensively, through trial, error and practice. I am now convinced that the "wet shaving" is the best way to shave.
