Tues 8/2/16

Merkur 37c, Gillette Silver Blue, Proraso Green Cream, Omega S brush, Witch Hazel + Osage Rub

I have no other way to talk about this SOTD besides  this is the way shaving should be in Florida every day.  Smooth... Cool... Close... Comfortable. Just awesome.

Not exactly a shave of the day, but my shave den. I figured that I don't have enough spare money to keep buying razors and I am trying to save my shave soap/cream wish list for Christmas want lists.....so I decided to start collecting shave mugs/bowls. Since I can go to the thrift stores or Goodwill and get mugs and bowls for 69 cents it's hard to pass up on what can amount to a huge shaving collection for very little money. These things will also be piled under the tree come Christmas time I'm sure since I have a couple of grandkids that will most likely wipe out the supply of mugs and bowls at said shops. O0 Anyway, my shave of the day for today was my 37c, Lab Blue blade, CaD shave soap, silver shave bowl for soaking my Van Der Hagen boar brush ( I head/face lather off a puck and bowl lather with my creams...Witch Hazel followed by Aloe Vera gel for post shave.

Very nice, I've been thinking about the same type of post.  I organize all my shaving stuff into this neat little desktop organizer I found at big lots for $5.  I won a pif contest from Warhawk through youtube (thanks Mel!) and should have a new razor in the coming weeks as a result so I'll wait to post my den pic.

Nice pic and shave! I think the 37C was my first slant.  Good choice!

Hard to beat that shave.  CaD is one of my favorite scents.  I can't tolerate the alum in PAA's matching splash, so I've discovered Fine American Blend is a very close match.

Razor:  Above the Tie S2 (open comb slant)

Blade:  Feather

Soap:  42 by Barrister&Mann

Brush:  Simpson Chubby 2 Synthetic

Dessert:  Ice cube rub and refrigerated 42 by Barrister&Mann

This is only my second shave with the Above the Tie S2.  It is a stainless steel open comb slant
razor. So far I am having some incredible smooth face & head shaves with it. I am actually surprised
that I am having some great shaves because I  previously owned the Above the Tie S1 which is a closed comb or safety bar slant razor. I wanted to like the S1 but it gave me some uncomfortable and rough shaves.  With my bad shaves with the S1 I sold it on another wet shaving forum. However.... the S2 has been a pleasant surprise.  I look forward to future uses with it.

I didn't remember your picking up the S2.  I'm glad it's working out for you.  I've always wondered, given all your refrigerated after shaves, do you have a dedicated refrigerator for them?  LOL!

Hi,it really looks good! But I didn't have an opportunity to get it and bought the cheaper one. But after shaving I regretted saving money as I have got a lot of razor bumps. Thanks God that my wife knew several recipes which are worth sharing. Have you ever known that you can get rid of the razor bumps with the help of cucumber, tea bags, yogurt or honey https://ambrossimo.com/get-rid-of-razor-bumps/? It is really interesting that we have many products at the kitchen and don't use them often. The homemade remedies are really natural and good. Now I am not afraid of razor bumps as I have a lot of remedies at home.

@120:  Hi Matt:   Yes.... I recently purchased in another forum a Above the Tie S2 and M2 separately.  I literally had to force myself not to use my Barbaros TR-1 razor.  Yes it is that good.   I hated my shaves with the ATT R1 and S1 because it was not comfortable so I sold it.  I can say that I am enjoying my shaves with both the M2 and S2 (Above the Tie).

BTW... are you going to get your Gem razors sent to Delta Echo for an upgrade.  I love their work.  I am thinking about getting mine upgraded later this year.  Let me know if you do.  I am sure you will not regret it.  They do great work.

I definitely intend to do this when I come across an appropriate razor.  I don't think I'll do it with my Damaskeenes because they're already in incredible shape.  I also don't think I'll do it with the Star 1912 because someone gave it to me.  I'll probably pick up a Gem with the art deco handle somewhere and give it the black and grey Delta Echo treatment. (That would be Sierra Echo, I guess...)

Here's my SOTD:

A better Picture of my growing shave bowl collection. My Grandkids picked out a couple of these and now I am just trying to collect things that are not too much the same. These all cost me less than a dollar a piece with a few exceptions . Yes ....I have a pink shave bowl....my Wife found it and we both thought the shape was really cool and it works very good for soaking the brush and for lathering. My shave for today was my 37C, a Lab Blue blade,Proraso Red and my VDH Boar brush. Witch Hazel and then Aloe gel to finish up. I really prefer boar brushes over Badger...I like the firmer bristles for exfoliating.

Barrister and Mann - Beaudelaire | Rubberset 200-4 | Gillette Pre-war Tech | Gillette 7 O'clock Super Platinum black (2)

Barrister and Mann veterans have enjoyed depth, complexity, and sometimes controversial scent profiles for some time, now. Few can question Will Carius' uncanny ability to impart mood and history into the essence of these products.  Recently we've enjoyed the inclusion of the spectacular Glissant base, offering a performance that matches the scents.  In discussing Beaudelaire, I find it difficult to avoid comparing the seemingly related fragrances of Lavanille and Night Music. Despite their vast differences, they feel like cousins with very different life experiences.  Lavanille is abundantly, if not rigidly, refined and elegant while Night Music boasts an unabashed sensuality bordering on unmitigated yet glorious indecency. I've previously suggested that Night Music is a sullied Lavanille.  Beaudelaire takes a different path celebrating the same depravity but with an air of opulence and lewdness in true bourgeois form.

Applying a few drops of water directly on the soap surface followed by swirls from the damp boar knot unlocked a sodden, dark, leathery, vanilla-esque presence without actually being vanilla. This was accompanied by damp, earthy, green oakmoss.  The fragrance was wet, heavy, and caliginous.  As I face lathered, the fragrance unfolded to reveal a more green but still murky aroma.  When the lather was fully matured the dark was complemented by a faintly sharp, bitter resinous fragrance with some elements of red rose petals at the stage in which the edges darken. Approaching the end of the pass, mildly pungent fern makes its presence without overwhelming the other notes. Then somewhere amidst the subsequent passes, in otherworldly fashion, these notes intensify and ultimately coalesce into a singular accord of their own.  One that I am at a loss to fully describe. None of the aforementioned notes are lost, but none of them can be isolated either.  It transformed into a fragrance that can only be describe as...Beaudelaire.

The matching splash (are we not calling these Toniques anymore?) accurately matches the soap with similar unfolding.  However, after about an hour it sweetens and spices up a bit without losing its earthy, green base.

As I reflect on my first impressions of Beaudelaire, I question how Hallows was never mentioned.  Hallows, in its own right, surely fits a dark and murky profile.  I've come to the conclusion that despite these shared characteristics, Hallows carries a muted, sinister, and abysmal darkness while Beaudelaire does it with flamboyant whimsy.  Beaudelaire is a fragrance that fans of Lavanille and even Le Grand Chypre will likely appreciate. I would even venture to say that if Night Music wasn't for you, yet contained elements you appreciated, Beaudelaire may be calling you.
