Today's SOTD...I was reacquainting myself with my Merkur Futur. It's been awhile since I used it so I sent it on '1' and took it nice and slow. Man! I forgot how good a DE shave is.

I've done that a few times. Generally though I usually do it at 3.

Pre: Shave Secret
Brush: VDH Boar
Soap: VDH Classic
Razor: Gillette Super Speed
Blade: Astra Superior Platinum
Splash: n/a
Post: Aubrey Organics City Rhythms AS Balm
After: Pinaud Clubman Classic After Shave Lotion
The Astra SP is a smooth blade! I think the Personna Red may have a competitor for my number one slot! Super close shave, no issues at all. Just slide over the dome with ease. Even thought the lather was less than stellar today. I think my experience with the VDH has been tainted by all of the awesome creams I have been using. That or I may be out of practice lathering a puck. Wasn’t horrible but definitely not as good as I remembered the VDH to be. I’ve decided I don’t really like the Aubrey Organics balm. I think I mentioned that in a previous post. Well today confirmed it. Don’t know if I’m going to finish it.
By the way, the smoke pictured is an Asylum Schizo 50×6. A very smooth, mild to medium smoke with woody, leather, and cedar flavors. I dabble in cigars occasionally also. Usually about once every couple weeks or so I’ll get the urge..

Last nite's SOTD, Thursday, June 19, 2014
Muhle R41 w/ Weber Bulldog Handle
Treet Platinum
Truefitt & Hill West Indian Lime
TSN Semogue 2012 SE
Ice cube rub, refrigerated WH, refrigerated Osage Rub
The Muhle R41 is notorious for being the most aggressive modern day safety razor. It comes in two versions the 2011 and the 2013. Muhle does not make the 2011 version. I had the 2011 Muhle R41 but sold it to a friend because it was too aggressive.
Recently I purchased the 2013 Muhle R41 (razor head only).... I had my 1st test drive last nite. I can say that the 2013 version is a little friendlier than her 2011 sister. This is definitely an aggressive razor. I had a great face shave but my head shave resulted with a couple of cuts and irritation. Thank God for my post shave of ice cube rub, refrigerated WH, & refrigerated Osage Rub.
Will I use it again??? Absolutely. . . I just need to be patient when using it on my dome. I am still smooth from last nite's shave. On a side note. . . I look forward to hearing more of your SAFETY RAZOR SOTD entries and topics. Also. . . if you are on the safety razor fence and want to know more, I invite you to post up a question here or kindly PM me. There is nothing better than shaving the traditional way.

Sunday, June 22, 2014 SOTD
2013 Muhle R41 w/ Weber Bulldog Handle
Tomac Super Stainless Steel
Truefitt & Hill West Indian Lime
Thater 4125/2
Ice cube rub, refrigerated WH, refrigerated Osage Rub
This is my 2nd time with the very aggressive R41. I had a great face shave. The head shave went better compared to my 1st test run a few days ago. I still got a couple of cuts but less irritation compared to my 1st test run. I am gonna be patient with the R41 because I am determined to tame it on my head shaves.
The Tomac SS blade is a vintage blade that I purchased on Ebay. It is super sharp and pretty smooth for a sharp blade. This was my 1st time with it. My post shave routine of the ice cube rub, refrigerated WH, and refrigerated Osage Rub was very welcoming on a hot Florida day.

Pre: Shave Secret
Cream: Proraso Green
Razor/Blade: Dovo Shavette w/Dovo long blades, and Gillette 1959 Fatboy w/Astra SP blade (for touch ups behind the ears)
Post: Osage Rub
First time taking the Shavette to the dome. Went fairly well, though I haven't figured out how to get around and behind the ears done very well, yet. Used a trusted DE for that. Like with the DE, it seems like using the Shavette on the dome is almost easier than on the face. There are some angles (jawline) and obstacles (goatee) on my face that are making the Shavette sessions more difficult (as they did initially with the DE). Enjoying the journey.

Hi Dan: That is awesome. Glad you shared your 1st test run with your Dovo shavette. We look forward to your journey. Who knows maybe I may revisit my Feather AC S/S?

Hi Mike: Wow!!! Love your new razor. That looks sweet. If I remember correctly you mentioned that it is more aggressive then your EJ89L, if so that is good because you will have a variety of choices. BTW... how do you like the Maca Root Razor Relief?
I have heard that the Maca Root Shave Cream is a great performer. I recently pulled trigger and will post up my review when I try it out. One thing about Maca Root is that it can be purchased locally at The Body Shop.

Mel,
I love the Maca Root Razor relief. It gives me a nice shine. I have the shave cream also, but I haven't used it in ages. My daughter got it for me as a gift before I was wet shaving and before I was paying attention to these things! I'll have to give it try tomorrow!

Dome & Face:
Prep: Shave Secret
Cream: TOBS, St. James
Brush: Vulfix Super Badger
Razor/Blade: Dovo Shavette w/Long blade & Merkur HD 34C w/ Feather blade (for touch ups)
Post: ClearHead
Splash: Osage Rub
After Shave: Nivea for Men, Cool Kick
Definitely liking this Dovo Shavette, especially for the dome, surprisingly. Making progress with it. Less touch ups required than yesterday, though I did get a very minor nick on my jawline with the Dovo. I'm gonna keep at it, though it wouldn't surprised me if I end up reserving the Shavette for the dome, and stick to the DEs for my face. There's something very appealing about straight shaving my dome. Go figure.

Prep: HeadShed
Pre: Shave Secret
Cream: Geo F. Trumper Limes
Brush: Vulfix Super Bader
Razor/Blade: Dovo Shavette w/long blade
Post: HeadClear, Ice Cube Rub
After: D.R. Harris Arlington (actually, the cologne, as opposed to the after shave)
First Shavette shave that I would call a complete success. No touch ups required. Head as BBS as I can get it when using a DE. Felt a couple stings while doing the back, but no blood or anything. Also, first time I have used Trumper cream. I quite liked it.
