First Try at a DE shave
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:51:55 AM »
I decided I had to see what a DE shave was like.  Curiosity was getting to me, so I picked up a Merkur DE last night on the way home from work and gave it a try.

I lathered up with HeadSlick and took my time so that I could get accustomed to the difference.  I also didn't want to end up with a bloody mess instead of a scalp.

I flat out loved it!  Yes, it took a little time, but what a great experience.  The result was an amazingly close shave - I kept rubbing my head to feel the smoothness.  I got a couple small nicks, by had a styptic pencil ready, so I only lost a pint or two of blood (just kidding).

I'm going to keep practicing because it takes a while to get the feel of the razor and the angle.  If you are on the fence about trying a DE, my vote is to give it a try.

Mike,

You're gonna like it.  It's a little time consuming, but worth it.  When do you expect your order to arrive?

I envy you! I'd love to try a DE or a straight razor but I haven't got the courage.

I was nervous about it, but thought "why not try?  The worst that can happen will be a few cuts".

Turns out that the DE is a little harder to manage than a cartridge razor, but not that much harder.  I'm going to keep at it in quest of the "perfect" shave!

Feel free to join me!

That's great! Btw, what setting did you have your Merkur set to?
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

Hi npsbg:  Congrats on taking the DE plunge.  Wow... U picked up a Merkur razor after work?  U are lucky that U have a store that U can purchase DE razors.  What kind of Merkur?  Keep us posted on your DE journey.

The store was a little out of the way, but not too far.  I bought a Merkur 180. It has a longer handle and a nice weight to it.

Hey npsbg:  That is a nice DE razor.  Merkur razors have a great reputation.  I hope U get many years out of this razor.  Keep us posted on your DE journey.

My order finally shipped this AM. I'm guessing that I'll get it on Wednesday.

There is a chain called "The Art of Shaving" that has stores across the country.  Some have barbers while others are just retail.  The chain itself is owned by Proctor & Gamble.  They sell several Merkur DEs.

If you check their website, you can see the store locations and find out if there's one nearby.

Let's hope it get's there Wednesday so you can give it a try.  I've been running late the past couple mornings, so I've only been using the DE on my face.  I'm getting the hang of it and like the shave.  This coming weekend, I'll use it on my head again.
