Kontera
« on: June 19, 2012, 03:20:41 AM »
I seem to have picked up this rather annoying thing called Kontera on my laptop.

It's not quite a virus... it turns certain words in to hyperlinks for ads.

I'm running on google chrome.

Any ideas how to stop it, or at least disable it?

Thanks,

Chris

Check this site. Might be helpful.

Thanks Mr Z!

It's a little technical for me, to be honest, but I'll see what I can do...

It's such an annoying way of advertising that it completely turns me off the products!

Yes, it is technical.  But That's probably what it takes to block it.

I did not read it thoroughly, but it looked like it's going to block some IP addresses from their advertising servers and that would solve things.

Also, looked like it was something that you would have to deliberately install, not something that just installed itself. Thus perhaps you can un-install it.

Thanks Mr. Z ... that was so annoying but I hadn't had a chance to investigate.

The site your referenced is a bit technical and it took me a couple of tries ... but Kontera is haunting me no more.

A lot's changed since the 80-column punch card I grew up with (though I still have a large stack on my desk for notes, messages and shopping lists). Ha!

I used to buy trays of 1000 cards when in college. Never used them since.

This is Jonathan from Kontera, normally I'm more of a hair thinning forum guy, but for you gentleman, I'll make an exception.  ;)

Kontera is a form of online advertising that publishers put on their site to earn additional revenue. If you don't want to see our ads, the easiest way to remove them is to click on the "ad choices" button in the upper right hand corner of the ad layer. That will stop the ads from appearing in your browser, regardless of what website you're visiting.

That sounds easy ... but when the ad appears I can't find the Ad Choices button. Where have I gone wrong?

It should be in the upper right hand corner, where it says "Related Social Content", not sure why it's not, I'll investigate.

In any case, that link would just take you to this page: http://www.kontera.com/ad-choices

You can opt out by following the link of the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the response. In another topic AdBlock was suggested which I installed and that solved the issue.
