I seriously want to go sly, just haven't taken the plunge yet...
I have Folliculitus Decalvans, which is an autoimmune disorder that makes the body attack the protiens in the hair follicules, causing the hair to fall out and scarring at the root/follicule.  I was a (nearly) sly- 1/16th Wahl cut for about a year and a half until I made the mistake of asking my wife what she wanted for Christmas "To grow your hair back"  Well, I did, and I hate it.  My hairline in the front is very uneven, with one side significantly higher than the other.
I'm not really concerned about what others will think, since I've been nearly sly before...I am actually concerned about possible breakouts on my head due to the (pretty rare) form of Folliculitus that I have.  I found that my scalp was a lot less sensetive when i was buzzing with a 1/16th clipper.  I guess I'm still in the boat of wanting to please my wife, even though I think i will be happier/more confident "sly"

Welcome BlackDog.

Do a search on Folliculitis and you'll see a large number of posts about this - don't know if they are specific to DeCalvans, but I think they will be helpful to you.

Again, welcome.

Welcome BlackDogBrewing. Do you brew beer? Cuz if you do, you're my new best friend.  :)

Seriously though, I had a follicle condition (not sure it was straight up follculitis) in my teenage years up until I first buzzed my hair at age 24. The follicles on the lower back of my head would become almost pimple-like, but they were bigger and harder than pimples. They would only go away with time, and have left some minor permanent scarring on the lower back of my head.
After I started buzzing my head, it rarely showed up. Once I started going fully sly/slick at age 27, it never once made an appearance again, and that was 5 years ago. I don't know if this will work for you the way it did me, because I admittedly don't know about the true nature of your condition.
It's worth a shot to shave clean, and keep it that way for a bit, though. You don't know what's going to happen with your scalp until you try.

About your wife, well in a case like this, she should want whatever makes YOU feel happy about YOURSELF, not so much what makes her happy. The reason you are here is because of strong feelings you have about your hair situation. She needs to recognize this. Maybe she needs to be reminded of her wedding vows.  ;D
Best of luck in your trials my friend. We have some members here who I'm sure will provide you with great skin-care tips. My shave routine is very low maintenance (just razor; shave cream; and some lotion), so I'm not so much an expert on that stuff.

Welcome to the boards, BlackDogBrewing!

I don't know much about folliculitis decalvans so I don't know about anything about the treatment for it (oral medication or topical application, is there any treatment at all?). I do however have a mild case of psoriasis, also on my scalp, so I was always scratching my head and my skin was shedding like crazy (like flaking dandruff). By shaving off my hair, it's way easier to treat my psoriasis: after shaving I can just apply ointment on my head, and except for a small red patch every now and then, my head is completely free of flaking skin.

Just make sure that you switch to a clean razor often and use all natural products.

Welcome and good luck....read through the various threads that offer tips on skin care....and maybe wives too. >:D No, seriously, when you follow through and go sly, she's going to need an adjustment period...but she'll get used to it.

Welcome BDB.  It sounds like going sly would be a big relief to all you've being going through.  Explain this to your wife and make it clear that this would make you happy.   No doubt her attitude will change when she sees how comfortable and confident you've become.   Good Luck

I do brew beer; I have shown many the way of homebrewing- if you can make soup or a cake from a box mix, you can brew beer.  I'd be happy to do an online tutorial for those who may be interested.
My profile pic is of me (nearly) sly last summer when my daughter was born, and the one below that I cropped is a particularily unflattering picture of me holding my son about two years ago.  I've lost a bit more uptop since then, especially on the side that is higher to begin with.  I prefer the way I look shaven, my wife always complained it was prickly...I do have some breakout issues from time to time, I'm hoping that going sly will help that.  I also made the mistake of asking my wife last Christmas what she wanted, she said she wanted me to grow my hair back...
I am so tempted to just do it while she's out shopping...

Wow,

Your profile pic is leaps and bounds ahead of that other pic you posted!

Seriously with the buzz you look like a adventure type guy (nitro circus type thing, or kinda like Jack Johnson).

I hope you find peace between your wife's views and yours... Good luck

I would expect "prickly" with a buzz cut, but "smooth" with a shave early in the day and moving towards "sandpaperish" late in the day.

Welcome BlackDog ...  I agree, your profile pic looks great and I'm sure the sly look would look great too.
