New Member Introduction
« on: June 08, 2012, 03:27:37 AM »
Greetings all!

I found this forum by pure coincidence a few hours ago, during a Google search on head-shaving tips.  I can't tell you how happy I am to have found a community of guys who are so supportive and advocate rocking the bald look!

I'm in my early 30's now, but started losing my hair at 19 with a bald spot that seemed to get bigger by the day.  It was destroying my confidence, and I decided to do something about it about 7 years ago.  At 24, at the time, I wasn't mentally prepared to take the full step and shave my head entirely.  I was still caught up in the notion that I had to have hair in order to feel confident in myself.  So, I became a client of one of the hair replacement companies.  It wasn't a hair transplant (no surgery involved in the slightest), but rather a non-surgical hair piece that is professionally put on and blended in to my own hair.  And, though I've been extraordinarily happy with the results, since they do a great job at making it look completely natural (so much so that in 7 years only one person has actually noticed my hair wasn't my own), I've realized that I don't think it is for me anymore.

I've been mulling over the idea of shaving my head for a while now, and I think it's time I did it.  This forum, and the multitude of threads I have read through in the past few hours, have convinced me that it is time to accept who I am and regain my confidence through being myself, not through hiding behind cover-ups.  Though friends and family have said it to me personally, it is really in reading what you guys have written here that has made me realize something I should have realized so long ago: It isn't the hair that makes the man, it is who he is and how he acts that shows his character and his confidence.

So, soon, I'll be saying goodbye to the hair I have left, and the hair I've been paying a monthly fee to have, and beginning my own 30-day challenge!

Welcome.

You've already said all that needs to be said.

I'll just add that when you shave you will feel an incredible sense of freedom, and weight being lifted. I'm BBC (and still in my initial 30 days) so didn't have as much emotion tied to my hair, and even I was stunned by the release going sly provided.

Glad you're here. Please stick around and participate in the forums. You have a great perspective to add.

Welcome Enoch,
I too suffered from constant hair loss for over 20 years before I decided to shave what was left off. A little over 3 weeks for me now. Make the 30 day commitment, it took me me a little extra time to do in the beginning, but now I'm back on my normal time schedule. Great info and support here on site. Good Luck. Post a pic when you get the chance. O0

Welcome to the Forum Enoch! Great first post and good on you for making the decision to be yourself with no fake hair.

Here's a little secret us SLY guys know......... more people knew about that fake hair than you think but never said anything about it. You'll probably find this out after you shave it off. Big props to your Family for encouraging you to ditch that hair piece!

Enjoy the extra monthly cash and use the first month's savings to get some good head shaving products.

Thank you all for the warm welcome (except for the comment about "more people knew about that fake hair, but didn't say anything," as all that comment does is make me wonder if my family and friends have been lying to me for seven years...not a pleasant thought to be given  ;)).

Once I fully shave my head, I'll post some pictures.  :)

Welcome aboard, Enoch! I'm really glad to hear you say this, because it's true. You are who you are, no matter what you look like. Be who you want to be, and do what makes you feel good about yourself. Those who truly matter will accept you regardless.

He was just trying to tell you that going sly isn't as big a deal as a lot of people make it out to be. We are not fans of hairpieces or hair loss remedies here, I'm sure you understand!  8)

Welcome aboard.  Sounds like you already know the secret: confidence comes from within, not from above.  You may be surprised by how much you like your new look.  Best wishes.

Welcome to SBG, Enoch!

I don't know what it feels like to wear a hair piece, but sometimes I wish I did so I could relate to the people who do and give them advice. It's great to hear you've decided to take the plunge. Your hair piece may still look alright at this point, but I've found that a lot of people start going overboard with it once they get older: they don't take into account the decreasing density and/or the increasing greying of natural hair. The more they lose their own hair, the more they try to make up for it.

And think about all the money you're going to save! I'd say: shave it off and treat yourself to a nice holiday with the money, just don't forget to put sunscreen on your head  ;)
