WARHAWK's safety razor journey
« on: June 05, 2012, 05:58:06 PM »
Hello fellow chrome domes:

Hope all is well with U and your families.  As some of U know,  I have given up my Fusion, Hydro 5 and M5.  No... I haven't given up head shaving.  I have entered the world of traditional shaving (double edge, single edge, straight razor).  As of April 4, 2012... I have placed my cartridges in retirement.

Since April 4, 2012, I have been enjoying my safety razor journey using a DE (double edge) razor for shaving both face and dome.  I can say that I get the smooooooothest shaves with DE razors compared to any cartridges.  It takes me longer but the results have been amazing.

My DE journey has been challenging and fun.  Challenging in that U have to be very slow and careful with your head shaves.  Fun in that there are many blades and products that U can "test".  BTW... blades are super cheap.  My current favorite DE blade is the Astra Superior Platinum blades.  U can get a 100 pack at Amazon for under $10. O0

My current favorite DE razor is the Edwin Jagger 89L and Weber DLC.  I also love the vintage Gillette Super Speeds, Lord L6, and Feather Popular.   I can talk forever about my fun DE journey but I'm gonna stop here.  On a side note... if anyone has questions for me regarding safety razors, please ask or give me a PM.  Enclosed is an awesome youtube video of DE shaving with one of my favorite razors the EJ89L (Edwin Jagger).  The video is from "Geo Fatboy" who owns shavenation.com and does some awesome youtube videos on DE shaving.  Hope U enjoy.

Had a good DE head shave this morning. Like the OP said, you just have to take your time. There were times when I was shaving and thought "This is going well" and I thought I might try to speed it up a little. I'm glad I didn't because I'm sure that there would have been a major blood letting if I had. Patience and practice are the keys to a good DE shave.
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

I am so tempted to try this Warhawk. I am only using a DE on my face, which I thoroughly enjoy. But one day my curiosity will get the better of me. I like the idea of using only a DE on both face and head. I don't wanna support plastic anymore. I will definitely let you know how it goes.

My cheapie, "Lion Brand" will eventually have to be replaced. SA is hopeless in finding a shop to walk in and buy. If I were to import one as a novice, what do you recommend? Only one! Thanks for the advice.

Waine..... this is the one I'm going to purchase. WARHAWK likes this one a lot. He  sent me some info in DEs a few weeks ago.

I use a Merkur as well as their blades. Luckily, when I was young, a DE was generally all that was available as well as an old fashioned throat cutter. One needs to remember that all razors are made to contour to the basically flat planes of the face. The rounded head presents a different set of contours. Do not, at first, expect the same results although you'll find that where you've got the angle right, it will be smoother than any cartridge blade. That said, not everyone should use a DE. It's very much a trial and error-buy a styptic pencil-learning curve. It does take time and you cannot use it, listen to the radio or conduct a conversation on a speaker phone. I find that a mirror is pretty much useless as only your fingers can tell you how you're doing.

On YouTube there's a video of a guy using a large, very sharp meat cleaver on his head and he does a great job. Clearly, he took the very advanced classes in shaving and one can only imagine the results the first few times....PJ

Now I am inspired. If a guy can do his head with a meat cleaver, I can learn with a DE.
