A footman was and is to some extent a household servent . There is only one place that I know has footmen as servents and that is Buckingham Palace , Betty , Pip and Andys pad . The role is that of waiting at the table accompanieing Master and mistress on jouneys involving a horse and carriage .
The 1st footman ( the senior ) would be a personal valet to the eldest son of the house
The 2nd would be to the younger son .
Polishing silver , lifting heavy items forthe maids ofthe house ,
The woke at 630 am and worked until 1030 at night or later every day with one half day possibly in 7 . They lived in the house ate with the other servents of the house and the local villagers may have allowed them to play cricket withthem .
Uniformwas a livery or now in Buckingham Palace the dress uniform is very elaborate .
More often the 1st Footman answered the door wherapon the butler would take control of guests .the butler was in charge , footmen didwhatthebutlertold them to do plus what the Lord and Lady of the House told them to do
The person I am playing lived a 104 years ago .
Taplow Court is a stately home owned by SGI-UK , a lay Buddhist organisation of which I am a member .
I hope this helps Tom toanswer your question
