Had first bad reaction... from someones mom???
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:25:40 AM »
Today my band played at a cafe on the upper west side manhattan, and my bandmates mom who had seen me a few times without hair finally told me it 'wasn't attractive' and to grow it back. Apparently my bandmate felt that I should grow it back too... I'm not terribly bothered by this, especially cause my other bandmates mom said I looked great. but what does bother me is that no one has seemed to get the logicalness of shaving my head. It seems as though these people haven't noticed my balding, and just think I want the skinhead look or something stupid like that. If this is the case, should I just say I'm going bald anyway?

I don't feel any obligation to justify my actions - and haven't to the few people who have been neutral or less-than-positive. Remember, you're in charge and it's really none of their business.

I find more frequently with each week that passes that people in general do a lot less thinking before speaking. I wouldn't spend more energy on the comment than it's worth. For example, if instead of your hair the comment was about your shirt - would you have a need to explain?

Just my two cents.

A simple "Thanks for caring, but I'm happy with it" if you felt the need for a response....no response was needed-As I always say "Don't entertain stupidity, let the stupidity entertain you!"

You did the right thing by not making a big deal about it, because it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks... It's what YOU think!!!   O:O

continue shaving.  It is you and you are proud of it.  They will adjust.

Hmmm, sounds like something a bit more complex than a hair critique.

I dunno, just sounds funny for a friend's mom to have an opinion about her son's friend's attractiveness. Like she had been giving it some thought. But then maybe I'm making something out of nothing. Or not.

Sometimes parents want their son or daughter's friends to be "totally perfect" ... for social reasons, which is insecure.

When your son / daughter has a young + balding friend, well, all of a sudden that parent has perfect reason to offer bad reactions to their haircut (or lack of hair).  Why?  Hair or lack of it is noticeable.  If you buzz/shave/sly your hair, you make a statement and sometimes insecure people use that as a negative issue to hide their issues.  LOL ... I don't want to sound Dr. Phil although I got his haircut !   LOL !

haha, you could be right. I got the sense she was just criticizing, who knows. you guys always have good advice, I guess if this sort of thing happens in the future I'll go with sir harrys response, "thanks for caring"
