Baked Oatmeal
« on: May 05, 2012, 07:40:58 AM »
I was introduced to Baked Oatmeal a few years ago when in Pennsylvania Dutch area. Loved it.

But it's typically very sweet. Lots of sugar.

Made some this morning, but left out the sugar. Added in two ground up granny smith apples.  Served with Greek Yogurt. Man it was good.

Did not even miss the sugar.  Goes well with a bald head.

mrzed.......How do you bake oatmeal ?  I usually do my oatmeal the old fashioned way by boiling, maple syrup ,apple and soy milk.

When I used to do night duty ,  i would get home in the morning and have porridge with whiskey and golden syrup .

Maplesyrup is expensive here .

Here's a link to the 'basic' recipe that I made.

http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Baked-Oatmeal

However, I omitted the 1 C of sugar.  (Remember Sugar is NOT your friend -- it's responsible for many ailments -- especially today's refined sugars).

I added two granny smith apples.  Ran then through the blender with the milk and eggs to chop them up.

I added 1/4 tsp of freshly ground nutmeg, only the best.  (Already ground nutmet is so lacking in flavor.  Freshly ground is excellent! And is sometimes less expensive than ground nutmeg).

Serve with a dollop of Greek Yogurt ( full fat, but plain -- no sugar added).

Did you prepare the 9 serving recipe or reduce it to one or two servings.
Sounds delicious 👍😄

No, I did the full 8x8 inch pan.  Saved the left overs for another day. Enough people at home to eat it up pretty quickly.

I wonder how it would be with a little honey instead of all that sugar... I've been on a honey kick for the past year, and I think it would fit here nicely. Maybe I'll have to try it.

Nate, I did mine without sugar at all.  But I've been eating sugar free pretty much for some time.  Remember, "Sugar is NOT your friend".  But if you need something a little sweeter, stir in some honey.

A full cup of sugar as called for in the recipe makes this sweeter than dessert!
