Just turned 40... Hair system wearer

New to the forum so wanted to say hello.  I think there is something about turning 40 that pretty much puts things in perspective.  I've been a hair system wearer for more than 10 years now and frankly I'm tired. I'm tired of the money I'm shelling out, I'm tired of constantly worrying about being outed. I hate it but now I've just gotten to the point where shaving my head and embrasing it seems alluring.  My issue is the transition.  Its easy in theory to tell someone, F it... just go in the bathroom and shave it... but in reality its hard to live a life one day with a head of hair and the next go into work etc with a shaved head on an obviously hairless dome.  Was anyone in this predictament?   I'm looking for something I guess. Help, guidance..whatever.  I've recently went to my hair system stylist for my cut and told her that I'm interested in maybe going smaller on each system to mimick resession and hair loss... then just finally shave it.  Who knows but maybe thats the answer.   What did you do if you were in this situation?

Sorry cant comment much on the hair system side.

I think you should just go for it, tell people that you wanted a change. I'm sure it will look awesome!

The fact that you're posting here on SBG is a definite indication you're leaning towards going slick.

I appreciate the novelty of "transitioning", but JUST GO SLY! Think of all the money you'll save! Plus, you'll not be hiding under a rug any longer...it'll just be you being you!!!

Just use a regular razor for touch up after shaving, no additional cost.
You've already got some type of shaving cream/gel, so no additional cost there either.

I was just reviewing some old photos with dates.

I've been buzzing my head since about 2005.

In 2009 I made a mistake and took the guard off for cleaning and forgot to put it back on.  BUZZ to no guard.  Oops. Have to do the whole head.

Humm. I liked it. No one commented except my wife. She said if my hair went shorter she was going to color her's purple. so she DID.  I love it!  (it was temporary).

But my short hair has become permanent.

Then January 2012 I got out the razor and finished mowing the lawn. Love it.  All good comments.  It's not a big deal in retrospect. The big deal is the lead up to the day that you shave your head.

It's all in your head/in my head.  Listen to all the guys here on SBG who LOVE being bald. Focus on all the guys in your community who also shave their heads. It looks GREAT. and Feels GREAT.

1.)  Chances are most friends, family, co-workers know you wear a system. You don't mention wife, gf, partner or their comments.

2.)  If you feel "gradually" thinning stages is a comfortable route, then get a thinner density hair system.  Or keep the one you have til it really thins/falls apart.  If you have a "hair" contract, like HCM, don't be bullied by their legal mambo-jambo threats.

3.)  Take a long weekend or week vacation and unglue the fake fur and just go sly.  You will be surprised how this will be less of an issue than you think.  Spring - summer 2012 could be alot more fun as a chrome dome ... just remember SPF suntan lotion.

Clearly the itch to shave is there so go for it.  Anything must be better than forking out large sums of money to the hair transplant charlatans.

Turning 20 is a great time to decide what YOU want in life.

There is always going to be a reaction when you make a big change to your image, whether you dyed your 'hair' or grew a beard or decided to spend the rest of your life dressed as superman... shaving your head will be just the same, no matter how little hair here actually is, people will always ask you why you chose to.

So avoid all the added stress of more 'systems' and attempting to look like it's only now your hair is receding, when people will have the same reaction at any point, just be you and enjoy a life without be glued down to what HCM wants you to think is good.
