Educate me Please
« on: April 19, 2012, 04:05:43 PM »
I've been shaving for about 10 years, now shave basically every day. About 3 or 4 months ago I developed a rash at the nape of my neck and above my left ear. It's quite itchy. I can't seem to get rid of it.

Ever since I started shaving I've just slapped on some shaving cream, shaved against the grain and towel dried, done. I've heard about witch hazel and aloe vera for rashes/spots and have just ordered some. I also ordered head clear. What advice can you give me, step by step if possible about applying these.

Would this be ok?

Shave - dry - apply witch hazel - wait 10 minutes - apply aloe vera gel - done

Thanks. I'm a long term shaver but novice when it comes to scalp care as I've just never had problems before.

Hey I'm only fairly new to head shaving but as for what I have learned so far, a d frommy face shaving experience is that prep is more important than anything.

You could try a hot shower and exfoliater before the shave, also a preshave oil.

If I don't do this when shaving my throat it always breaks out in a horrible mess!

Witch Hazel ans Aloe should also help.

Hopefully someone with more experience will jump in and give you some advice also!

hey morton:  i would suggest a few things.  immediately after your head shave,  do a cold water rinse (1 minute), ice cube rub on dome until ice cube has completely melted, towel dry, splash some witch hazel (let air dry), then apply clear aloe vera gel.

if that doesn't work that day.... do the same routine but instead of applying aloe vera gel use HYDROCORTIZONE 10 LOTION.  DO NOT use the ointment or cream because it doesn't work as well.  i learned this from our sly brother (saintc).  U can find the lotion at walgreen's.

these past two weeks... i have been DE shaving my face and dome.  the face shaves are good but the my head shaves left my dome with major razor burn and red bumps.  the hydrocortizone 10 lotion has relieved the razor burn and red bumps on dome.

hope this helps and keep us posted.  good luck and may U get good results.

Replies appreciated.

Any suggestions as to what brand of witch hazel and aloe vera I should use or probably more important shouldn't use.

I d go along with  all the preps but consider that Hyrocortisone will clear it up quicker  , remember  to dry your freshly shaved  dome  before  applying

I used to have some pretty bad razor burn and bumps but after using HeadShed pre-shave and ClearHead after the shave, I virtually have little to no redness at all. Always good to prep before the shave and put some kind of aloe or after shave on there. It burns a little normally but you get used to it and it keeps your dome healthy. Good luck!

I like cycling and had a bad rash in my nether regions last summer. The doctor gave me something called acuatim. I still have it and started applying it to my head on Friday. The spots/rash/itching have pretty much cleared up. It's pretty greasy though, and it's prescription only, so it ain't a permanent solution. Just waiting for my witch hazel and aloe to arrive.

I was going to recommend the exfoliator, as well. When I use the scrub I put it on after the shave and let it sit for a couple of minutes, then give it a good scrub and rinse it off. Oh yeah, and always in the shower.
