shampoo with spf?
« on: May 09, 2007, 09:20:53 AM »
hi all!

my first post here!

although i know it is probably not practical nor possible (i haven't seen any online), i was wondering if anyone has come across any shampoos with spf.

i live in nyc and commute everyday, enjoy outdoor sports, etc.  i had two malignant melanomas removed from my back (nothing has returned) and am obviously worried about my thinning head.

applying spf or wipes everyday is a pain (not to mention sticky).  i'm just looking for a quick solution.

at present, i only apply a sport spf when on outdoor expeditions or wear a hat.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would think it would just wash out in the shower.

exactly what i thought.

however, they have been advertising sun protection in shampoo for women's hair to protect color = maketing hype.

if they could come up with something, that would be brilliant, but as we've mentioned... it just doesn't seem possible.

anyone else hear of anything?

Jeff, This is exactly one of the reasons that I started shaving my head.  I didn't always want to wear a hat, and I didn't care to run sunscreen through my hair just to get to the sun-exposed scalp whether I was in a pool or just out-and-about.  Now it's quick and easy -- just apply the sunscreen and go.  I don't know how far along your hair loss is at this point, but by advice is to just shave it all off.  We're here to help you through it if you need a shove.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Hey Jeffnyc, before I went Sly, in the summer I would towel dry my hair and then "spray" some coppertone spf 45 on my head. Then I would do my 1 minute blowdry  ;D on my hair. I would get the non-greasy formula. You can check my pic in the before and after gallery to see how much hair I had.
I will tell you that since I have shaved it has been alot easier and I am worry-free about whether I have protection now. Please take time to read through some post and really think about your hair if you have the slightest complex over it. Everyone here is great and willing to advise and encourage you if you decide to make a change. PS... I live in the south so I see alot of sun!

sorry for any miscommunication guys.

when i said "worried about my thinning head"... i meant that i was worried about my head being exposed to the sun.

i LOVE my receding hairline and my short, short haircut.  i've always admired bald guys (bruce willis, patrick stewart, etc., etc.) and when my hair is receded enough... OFF IT WILL COME!

thanks for all of the advice!

Jeff, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  You could try HeadShade by HeadBlade.  It's a spf spray.

Back when I still had a little bit of hair (like before 2 weeks ago) I would just get some of the spray on sunscreen and spray it directly on my head.  My hair was so thin that I could usually get pretty good coverage on my scalp.  I seemed to work pretty good and kept me from getting a sunburned scalp many times.

Now I have been trying to find some Head Shade in stores in my area.  I have checked at Wal-Mart, Wal-Greens, and CVS (places where I have found other Head Blade products) but have not had any luck.  Other than online, does anyone know where you can get this product???

welcome jeff....glad you found SBG's. I too highly recommend Headshade by headblade. Recently started shaving, and was exposed to pretty intense sun soon afterward, was very well protected.

SLYinKC, I have the same problem here on the east coast finding the Head Shade. I think they supply the west first and slowly make their way east once they have stocked the shelves!!  >:(
Let me know when it makes your area and I can estimate when I will see some!!

SPF is shampoo has been a problem because it washes out. If you have thinning hair you can use Bald guyz Sunscreen SPF 30+ which is a quick drying gel and can be applied through thinning hair directly to the scalp. Be careful with using spray sunscreens because the hair will actually prevent the sunscreen from reaching the scalp.

Whatever you do, make sure you rub it into the scalp thoroughly for protection.
