Did I make the right decision?
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:48:02 PM »
Aside from working in  a regular office, I also do some acting, singing, dancing in some musical plays once in awhile... This month, i was casted as the main role in a musical play, however they asked me to wear wig since the original star of this broadway musical sported good hair, and all who previously took the role have full grown and floppy hair.

Is it right when i said to the production that i would not be wearing wig or rugs or hat in protraying this role. I'm happy being bald. That if they don't agree with my terms I won't take the role. Well, whether they take me in or out, doesn't matter anymore, what matter is i show them how to respect a sly bald guy. DID I MAKE THE RIGHT ACTION AND DECISION, WHAT DO YOU THINK, BRODS?

As long as it didn't jeopardize your career, I applaud you for standing up for your B&B- beliefs and baldness!

I admire you for sticking to your principles, but you have severely limited your options for roles.  Even Bruce Willis wears a rug for certain roles.  While it's never something I would recommend for real life, there's no shame in using one on stage or screen.

It really depends on the writer & the script, if he wanted a hirsute character on stage, then on stage you should be hirsute, if he doesn't indicate one way or the other--consider the director's preference, he's the one who will consider you for another role.  Once the curtain falls, the wig falls too.

Wearing a hairpiece is okay because you are playing a role.  Don't pass up good parts just because you don't want to wear a rug.  If the character calls for hair, go for it.  You know who you are underneath.

I would agree to wear the rug for the show. It sounds like they want it to be as close to the broadway show as possible.

They obviously think enough of your talents to offer you the role.  8)

I's say it depends upon the role and if it's an important part of the costume. Many roles just would not be believable without hair. I could not imagine a believably sly Jean Valjean, for example.

If it's immaterial, I'd likely push back a bit on an unnecessary and uncomfortable hairpiece.

Think of yourself as a blank canvas. If they want you to wear a wig to portray the character the producers have in mind where is the harm in that? No different to clothes or makeup.

I have been asked many time to let my hair grow out for weddings, Baptism, graduations and just recently for a confirmation.  I always tell whoever is asking me, NO, this is me.  I'm bald because I want to be bald and if you need me for what ever reason you are going to have to take me bald or not at all. So far no one has refused me for being bald but they have tried.  In fact many of the same people who asked have commented that I really look handsome bald in a tux and apologized for asking me to let my hair grown out.

Now, for a career choice, yes i would grow out my hair since as an actor there will be different role with different style that you need to accommodate.  It's the same if you were asked to shave your head bald for a leading role.   For actor, you have to be able to do what is needed for the role.

To all of you my brothers here in our sly bald forum., thanks a lot for all your comments and good counsel. You have enlightened my thoughts and gave me new perspective O0 O0.  I already discuss things with my producer and i agreed to wear wig if they want me to. I will even shave my beard if that is part of the requirement.

But off-stage i will really enjoy being bald... and will grow my beard after this... Again thanks a lot for your invaluable support. O0 O0

I think this is the best piece of advice.

Playing a role in a play or movie is not you; you're an actor.

Be yourself off stage. Be the character with or without hair on stage.

Pogi, I was once at a off-broadway show of Tony and Tina's wedding in NYC.  One of the actors kept coming over to my wife and I and interacting with us.  After the show I saw the cast leave and it turned out that he was Sly and was wearing a wig during the show.  As we walked by he just gave a thumbs up and kept going.
