Another 'balding at a young age' post
« on: February 17, 2012, 12:10:24 PM »
Hello, This is my first post on here after a few weeks of lurking about.

To give you a quick introduction to me i have been thinning since 19 (or that is when i first got told i was thinning by friends) but i never really noticed so ignored it. I'm 21 now and still have a good hairline however I actually looked at my crown for the first time ever about 3 months ago and boy was that a shock to the system! i am balding zinedine zidane style only i don't have the 'mean guy' looks he dose to look great bald!

Anyway i refuse to go down the drugs route as i am a fan of having a sex drive so looks like going sly is the only option really.

I mentioned going sly to my gf and she was not a fan of the idea at all as i am very pale and was a 'difficult birth' meaning i have a dip where my forehead meets the top of my skull and my forehead ends to soon so my head looks pointy from the side. However these problems can be covered up with hair.

I have enough hair to kind of cover the thinning but i know it is only going to get worse and i am getting self conscious about my balding spot. From what i have read on here i think going sly will be the best way to regain some of my lost confidence.

Just wondered what the reaction of anyones partner was when you first mentioned going sly? and if anyone has any tips on convincing partners that sly will, probably, be better?

Thanks for any reply and keep up the great work. This is an amazing site :)

My partner isn't a big fan of the sly look -- he prefers me buzzed to sly -- so I took the direct route: I just did it. You know, the whole ask forgiveness rather than permission thing.

In reading the accounts of the various members here, the reactions have run the entire gamut from being the one who suggested it in the first place all the way to hating it intensely. It really depends upon your girlfriend.

My partner, even if not a fan, doesn't give me any guff about it 'cause he knows it makes me happy. If your girlfriend is opposed, is she committed enough to you to do the same?

Many on this forum have gone against the family/friend,community norms and survived...some have gained much confidence like you mentioned. Welcome to the forum.

When I even hinted of shaving my head, my wife reacted negatively.  I decided to do it when she was going to be out of town for 10 days and I could give it a try. Well a few days before she left, she gave a hint that it might be ok, so I jumped on it and shaved my head the next morning.  She was not very happy about it, but did not through a fit. Mentioned that I could have it grown back before she returned.

While she was away, I flooded her mailbox with photos of bald me. Shaved every day. Love it myself.

She's slowly getting used to it.  She probably still would prefer that I grow my hair back, but she is not going to drop me just because of hair.  She is pleased that I really enjoy it.

I've had much better reaction from friends and co-workers, many of whom say I Rock the sly look.  And some on this sight have said the same.

I do make a point to be especially affectionate towards my wife and she really likes that.

Thank you for the quick replies :)

Ha yeah i was thinking the beg for forgiveness rather than beg for approval.

However it is bloody chilly in england this winter so i will wait until summer i think.

Whilst i have been thinking about possible reaction i am just wondering what reaction any of you got off your friends and bosses? (not so fussed about family because my mum is the one who told me shorter styles work better). I assume as i am only 21 peoples first reaction would be thug / Chemo patient ha?

Great posts mrzed, slynito and sly bear.

Good luck jj. You probably will like it. Give it 30 days. If you don't like it, it will grow back.

No one has ever suggested that I'mk a Chemo patient. I guess the beard helps with that.

BIC that sh*t!

I started noticing i was going bald my senior year... waiting until i was 20 to start shaving it a zero and finally realized at 21 that bic'n it was the way to go.

I love being bald and there are a lot of girls in college that find it attractive. Heck, most thought i did it for swag and didn't even know i was going bald. Some will always not like it, and it will look weird to you and others at first.

The worst part about shaving my head was everyones reaction who didn't know until they saw me. Once i got past that, and now i'm approaching a year, everything is great.

That's exactly right.  Anticipating the first reactions of those who haven't seen your shaved head is always the worst, but the anticipation is worse than the reality.  Reactions are usually positive or there is none at all.  But it's always a relief when it's out of the way.

Great looking dome you've got there.  Glad to see that there are plenty of 20-somethings out there who aren't afraid to do what needs to be done.   O0

Welcome jj! My girlfriend was opposed like yours, and even refused to admit that I was balding to any real degree. Now that I'm sly she loves it and talks about it all the time, she even looked at old photos of me and commented 'woah you really were losing your hair, I'm so glad you shaved it, you look so much better'. Trust me, the confidence that this will give you, will make you far more attractive to your woman than hair ever could.
