Do the Sly guys who use the fancy modern razors notice the effect that I see in my antique single-blade razor: that the second shave with a new blade is better than the first, as if somehow the blade had to be broken in?  Maybe it's a "honing" of tiny new blade manufacture irregularities on the skin and hair?

Blades feel good to me for several shaves before degrading. But Ming, tell me, have you been allowing Flash to brew your coffee?

I have not noticed it when head shaving with the HeadBlade.

However, for face shaving with the Fusion, I've had the same experience as you. I have found that the first shave with a new blade often seems to pull more than the next shaves.
