Safest and fastest way to shave head by yourself
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:21:09 PM »
Alright guys, so I've gone sly for 2 weeks now. It's pretty okay I guess. I'll post up pics in the next few days or weeks when I have the chance. I got my first headshave at a barber shop 2 weeks ago and now I want to shave it by myself for more convenience and don't always want to spend the money at the barber's.

What do I need to buy to shave my head? I tried doing it myself a few days after my first time at the barber's and it was taking so long and I didn't do it very well. I was using the same shave cream and same kind of razors I use for my face. Bad idea? Is there better equipment for someone who doesn't have much experience headshaving and not alot of patience? I don't want to get anything too expensive though.

A good razor, shaving gel, and aloe gel for aftershave is all I use. I've tried all the products and find its nothing but a waste of money. Keep it simple and enjoy.

Contrary to popular belief you CAN use the same razor on your head that you use on your face ;). I've been a Head Blade user for quite a while but recently started having problems that I think were associated with my need for speed. I have gone back to my beloved Personna M5 Magnum for now. In my case using a stick razor like the M5 causes me to take it slower than I did with the HB.
Just make sure you use a good quality razor and a good quality cream or gel and take your time. Make sure that you use the proper form until that becomes your habit. Then when the speed comes (and it will) your foundation will be proper form. That will greatly reduce blood loss.
In the meantime enjoy the process.

I just started shaving my head this past week. Day 6 tomorrow.

I use the schick Hydro 5 razor (from CVS), Head slick shave cream (from Walgreens) with 3-4 drops of Shave Secret (From Walmart).

And a hot shower.  Seems to go pretty well. Just back and forth in all directions until everything is slick smooth.

Then after shower, I splash on some Bay Rum from Sally's, and some Aloe Vera Gel from Walmart.

Pretty standard stuff. Shave daily. The shower AND shave takes about 15 minutes total. Most of that is the shave.

You'll pick up on speed after time especially once you figure direction of hair growth if you want to shave against the grain. Some spots are tougher than others. Knowing your this will help cut down on razor burn too. At first i recommend shaving slowly to get the process down and so you don't nick yourself silly.

I keep it simple. Same razor on my face as I use on my head. I use either a headblade or Mach3. Headblade take it slow at first. You have to get use to using it.

I apply about 4 drops of King of Shave Oil (KOS) and then gel shaving cream. The KOS eliminated the razor burn for me. Then i shave against the grain and i do it mostly by feel. I shave in the shower and do have a mirror. But the back of the head is really by feel. After I'm done shaving, i wash my head again (basic soap or face clearer) and i use glossy headlube by headblade for the best shine.

I'm down to about 7 minutes for shaving. Shaving every day or everyother day makes shaving easier too.

I find it quickest to use a electirc (i use the cleanhead) and then razor it afterwards, barely anyhair.

Two weeks is a pretty short time to learn the technique that works best for you.  My bet is that at the end of your 30 days your speed and the quality will have improved.  Patience, just enjoy the experience.

I use a Wilkinson Quattro razor for face and head, Nivea shaving gel, Wilkinson badger shaving brush to spread gel around, Aloe Vera gel as aftershave. Soothing - leaves a good shine!

I have been shaving head for some years - use same for face and head.  I adopted the Magnum M5 for use after reading posts here.  there are some here who damn that.  I suspect any multi bladed  cartridge  will work fine.  My advise is not to press hard but go lightly and  go over it again if not smooth by feel - in different directions.  I use gel for shaving cream.    I get the M5 set of 4 cartridges for $5.88 at the local food store.  Gillete  fusion cartridges are more than double that.

I use a Panasonic mostly and use the methods posted above...they all give good advice. Good luck.
