First time head shave - going by feel?
« on: January 19, 2012, 11:10:30 PM »
So, Im planning on shaving my head during the weekend. I dont own a second mirror to see behind my head, so I have to go by feel. I am afraid that I will miss a spot and look like a dork, so is going by feel easy to do? What way do you guys shave? Ever missed a spot and had someone comment on it?

I shaved my head for the first time yesterday.  While I did take a mirror into the shower with me, I probably could have done without.  I just go by feel.  It's pretty obvious what needs shaved and what spots you've missed.  Yes, it was easy to feel the spots that I missed.

Actually, I did not have any comments that I even shaved my head!

Strangely enough going by feel on my dome is far more accurate in terms of a clean and smooth shave. I don't know why but trying to shave my head while looking in a mirror cunfuses me.
For the face I use a mirror because I have to shave around a goatee and I haven't learned to do that by feel.

Since day one I've been using only 1 mirror. It's best to go by feel, because the hair is already so short you can't clearly distinguish the parts you've already shaved and the ones that you haven't (also happens on top of my head: I can feel a spot I've missed, but I can't see it in the mirror).

So go by feel I'd say, and after shaving, if you live with someone else, let them check the back of your head. There's days when I'm in class, I rub my head and I suddenly think to myself: "sh*t, I missed a spot, this must look ridiculous." But no one ever commented on missing a spot.

But use at least one mirror in front of you: you'd be amazed at knowing where your neckline stops, but having no clue where your hairline begins (and you don't want to shave off your eyebrows).

I shave by feel and it's pretty easy.  Use your free hand to feel your scalp as you shave and you quickly find if you missed any spots.  One you think your done, rub your head with your free hand to see if you missed anything.  You'll get the hang of it fast.

Yes, I do have one mirror in my bathroom that I can use for seeing the front.

I've been shaving for not quite one year.  In that time I have tried shaving with double mirrors once and I've had a BAD cut once...care to guess if there was any linkage between the 2 events?

Buzz the remnants down stubbly short, wash, prep, lather it up ,get the razor out and just do it.  I do use a small supposedly fog free mirror in the shower for my face, neck and around the edges where my beard ends. For the top and back it's strictly by feel, you may not believe it but will find that your sense of touch is far more accurate about a missed spot than your eyesight is.

Can't tell you how many times I've taken a look in the mirror and thought things were fine on my face and then run my fingers over it and needed to get the razor back out.    This rarely happens on the back of my head sinceI run my fingers over it during the process. There is this one annoying spot on the top of my head that just doesn't come out right regardless of what I do without separate attention - we've all got these aggravating areas, you'll discover your's in time.

Good luck.  Most likely it'll lookgreaton you and you'll love it - if not, it's only hair and it'll grow back in no time.

I have always used a mirror to shave the back of my head, but being a barber for over 30 yrs it's always been easy to do it.  Most guys say they get confused or can't do it, but it will take practice and time before you are able to get used to it and get a good smooth shave.

If you want to do it by feel and it works for you by all means do it that way, but if you want to use the mirror it will take time to get used to it.

Good luck.

I use a front mirror for my face & head & use my free hand to feel stubble for both my face & head 👍😄

Obviously it comes down to whatever you are most comfortable with and works for you.

However, as a newbie, a bit of extra learning curve may pay off in the end.  There is no real apparent benefit to double mirrors etc.  So, that being said, why not simplify things and just go with the "by feel" approach.  No seconf mirror means one less thing to deal with in the bathroom  and you may well end like many us with a bathroom that ends up choked wiht shaving supplies....Not that they are necessary but they become part of the quest for that perfect BBS (baby butt smooth) shave...Relax, enjoy the ride, it can be fun.

I say ditch the second mirror and go by feel. I would imagine that using two mirrors would be disorienting and could lead to an accidental cut. You'll be able to tell by feel if you've missed a spot. Also, listen while you're shaving. You'll be able to hear the spots where you razor is slicing hair. When the sound is gone so is the hair
