Bald crown or receding line?
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:51:37 AM »
I am 35 and hate me hair.... but still chicken to shave it.

I guess my receding line does not look horrible and that alone I would not be going crazy, but I have little self self confidence because of my crown.

I buzzed it to a three many months ago and let it grow right back, the biggest reason why is my uneven receding line, it is not even.  I am more self aware of the unevenness then I am the receding by itself.

I would keep my hair close the the way it is but the crown is driving me crazy.

Should I take the plunge?

The biggest hesitation I right now is the coldness in the winter and the tan line?  I can not make the skin tone in the winter...  Also convincing my wife it is a good idea.

Your hairline and bald crown are similar to mine.  It was only when I shaved my head for charity back in the spring that I saw my hairline had receded as far as it had.  It was a surprise, but the other surprise was how much I liked having no hair.  From the first shave, I was hooked.  I like how it looks and feels to be bald.

My advice: shave your head and try the 30 day rule to give yourself and your friends, family and co-workers to adjust.  You'll find the adjustment is pretty easy, really.  And if you're like the rest of us, your self-confidence will get a boost.   If you don't like being bald after 30 days, let your hair grow back.

Yes, a bald head gets cold in the winter, but that's only a minor inconvenience.  Getting the skin tone to even out will take a little time, too, but it's worth it.  And guess what?  If you like being sly, your wife will probably like it too.

Good luck - hope you try it and find the smooth dome as awesome as the rest of us do.

comments on your photos.

The 'buzz' (from 18 months ago), looks very nice and easy to care for (to me).  I buzzed to #3 several years ago. Then #2, then #1.  Right now I'm not using a guard. And planning to shave bald on Saturday.

It will only take a few days to get back to my current length if I really don't like it, but after reading all the positive comments here on SBG, I'm certain I'm going to like being bald.  I don't have male pattern baldness (MPB), but if I did, I'd shave bald in a moment, without further thinking.

Wife and I were out shopping this morning.  Lots of bald guys out there!

So, my recommendation.  If you don't want to cold turkey being bald, just buzz down from #3 to no guard over the next month, and then after a week or so (you're almost bald already), just do it.

Yes, do the 30 day rule!  By then, you and those around you will be used to it and you won't want to mess with hair again.

Well, you're home.  I'd say most of the guys here at one time have been where you are--it's not the end of anything, but it can be a great beginning of a lot of new things for you--it's entirely up to you.  And remember you're the only one who counts here, no one else, family, girl friend, wife, significant other, no one--just you the 24/7 guy.  Do what makes you feel the best about you.  The chart below shows a gauge of the stage of baldness in male pattern baldness.  Of course the speed that the baldness takes is unique to every guy, some very fast, very young, sometimes it starts fast, slows down, speeds up--the variations are endless, but what always happens is that it progresses.  Mother Nature is relentless, she's just not very neat about it.  You could buzz and minimize the effect right now it would appear--long hair seems to emphasize what's missing!  So, you could also shave it off, get totally out front, and really just move beyond this.  MPB can take over if you let it, making you unhappy to one degree or another.  Going sly, well, it's over and you just put that concern behind you, draw a line under it and move on.  I believe one of the most common remarks by newly sly guys is, "I just wish I'd done this so much sooner!"  That certainly was me, caught with a combover before I realized what happened.  Don't let it happen to you.  Read the threads you'll find that is true.
Here's the chart, it shows where you are and where you will wind up--just don't be foolish and think drugs and expensive rugs are any cure--they're not.

Shave it, give it the 30 days, and I bet you never go back. In fact much like myself I bet you kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

If I am wrong by some chance it will grow back pretty quick and at least you won't be wondering what do to anymore....

Did your wife sign a contract that she owns your hair ?

Keep it buzzed tight until warmer weather and then take the refreshing sly splash into spring-summer !

Good Luck !

1) If you hate it, shave it.
2) Why worry even one more day about something that is really quite trivial?
3) Your wife will, more than likely, LOVE it.
4) All these SBG guys can't be wrong.
