Welcome to the group. When you go with the grain it will be less irratating on the skin but you won't get the total sly feeling and shine that comes when you go against the grain. If you go against be careful to prep your head before shaving (hot water is the key) , don't apply to much pressure on the blade and rinse with cold water to close the pores. That's what i do and you'll see you'll get quite a few responses from other sly brothers that will also help you.

Yes, it's like when you shave your face (i take it you shave with a blade) against the grain on your neck leaves less of a 5 o'clock shadow than on your cheeks which are usually shaven with the grain.

after you've shaved for a while, the skin on the scalp toughens up and shaving against the grain doesn't cause irritation. I shave against the grain on the back and top. For the sides (which are the most sensitive part of the scalp) I go first with the grain then against the grain.
Shaving against the grain gives the smoothest shave and the most awesome feeling - like you have no hair at all.

I have really thin hair...so I pretty much go against it from the get go.
Keeps a super close shave!

well, against the grain makes ur head more smooth, also gets a closer shave.
on the other hand, you have more chances to irritate!

If you skind can handle it I would recommend to go against. As others have said, the shave is as close as it can get, baby smooth.
I shave every day, there is only so much stubble after 24h....I have to go against

Nothing beats the smoothness one gets when shaving against the grain. But if you are happy with the result of shaving with the grain, go with what you are comfortable with. Best regards.

I shave against the grain straight off. Use a Wilkinson Sword "Quattro". Gets my head super smooth. Use the same razor for my face. New blade every 7 days. Been Sly for a year. Never suffered any irritation or burns problems.

Go with what ever feels most comfortable for you.. for me i shave everyday against the grain, it gives you the smoothest shave possible...
prepping the dome thoroughly is a must for a great shave... think of prepping the dome as a thorough warm-up and stretch before the workout.

I go with the grain and then against when using a Fusion or my Panny...it makes my head as smooth as a pigs snout. Good luck!
