Real tree only.  I grew up with artificial trees (including an aluminum one for a few years) and vowed never to have one once I left home!

Ours is "environmentally sustainable"!  It is a farm grown tree, and after it's taken down on Twelfth Night [the start of the Carnival Season in Louisiana] it will go with the other real trees to be bundled and placed in the wetlands to form the basis of "growing" back the acreage that has been lost.

We have a fake tree that is old as heck so it isnt really less messy than a real one. We do cut branches from the spruce/fir trees to make stuff for the house that smells like a real tree though.

Saint, that is awesome. I am a big nature nerd so things like that are great. In some of the lakes folks sink old trees for fish habitat up here

We actually have two REAL trees this year. We decorated the one in the main living room as most people decorate these days.
The one in our Family room is decorated the way trees were decorated when I was a kid...... big bulbs, old fashioned ornaments, and that silver tinsel. It loooks awesome! My kids LOVE it!

After Christmas I drag ours out into the woods so they can go back from whence they came.

Our town collects the trees in early January, chips and mulches them and offers the mulch for free back to town residents.

I miss the 70's, growing up in Northern Illinois we used to take a horse drawn sleigh to the woods to cut down a tree, with hot cider or chocolate. Now with the convenience of pre-lit artificial tree's, I'm afraid I got lazy and have had a fake 10 foot tree since my adulthood.

It's funny that I found this post today as we put our tree and decorations up today.

Artificial.
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.
