Will being bald make me look older? (Looking for advice)
« on: November 29, 2011, 01:40:09 PM »
So i'm 21, and doing well for myself.
Got a nice job that i'm working hard on keeping, playing the field a little bit, got my own place.
What I don't have much of is confidence, which I am working on, and for the past 2 years my hair has been thinning.
I was initially in denial because almost nobody in my family is bald, but I have accepted it, and just looking for advice before I completely shave my head.

I have been working on getting in shape (which I am doing very well with right now), and I am going to remove my braces soon too.
Will shaving my head make me look older?
I keep a nice full beard (a light one), and it works very well with me as I am half Middle Eastern.

Right now nobody guesses that I am over 22, and I am afraid having a bald head all of a sudden makes me look MUCH older, which for obvious reason can not be good.
I often see people who keep hair on the sides and who do comb overs look older and worse than guys that shave fully.

Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

I'm 16 and I shaved my head on Thursday. I didn't exactly look all that young before, but now I look (to me) like I'm around your age now. I was at the store a few days ago and I had never been called "sir" so many times in one day. I've also seen people that looked much older with hair and then they shave and look like little kids. I guess it depends on the person.

Thanks for the response, and yes I guess that makes sense.
Are you balding, or did you willingly shave your head?

Good on you man.

I have coverage all over my head but it's really fine hair. I got my hair cut short last week and was frustrated by the fact that when I would try to take a picture of myself, the light over my head seemed to make my hair vanish so I decided to shave it. Everyone thinks I'm losing my hair anyway. I'll take bald jokes over balding jokes any day. Plus I really like the look on me. I didn't even take me a week, much less 30 days.  O0

You're question should not be "am I going to look older?" rather it should be "will shaving my head make me more confident?"

You may or may not look older if you shave your head...if you don't shave you WILL look older.  If you follow the 30 day rule - shave your head for 30 days straight - then you will have more confidence in the end...every one does.

I'm new ( 6 days and counting) to the shaved look, I'm also 47 yrs old.. but people say that I look much younger.. It's not only the shaved look, but how you dress and present yourself that shows your age. I've noticed this ..and with a lot of observation.. you are now slick and clean, so dress that way also.. older guys wear baggier clothes, shirts tucked out to hide there shapes,  now ..dress neat. Crisp shirts, even tees.. never sloppy.. and walk straight, shoulders up...  with purpose.. as us guys get older we tend to slow.. but young guys strut their stuff..

In general, young guys with shaved heads tend to look older and older guys look younger. Its all about attitude, on how you carry the bald lifestyle. Best regards.

Got a photo, after 2 posts you need one.  Then, I'm sure some one on this board will let you know.    'older' isn't all that bad ya know. ;)

At 21 you can affford to look a little older. It's not necessarily a bad thing if people think you're 25 or 26. Twenty years from now you can start to worry about looking older.  ;)

Tyler is right; thinning hair will make you look much older and out of date.

Hey, cadet!

You are balding, man, so shaving the dome is the right thing to do.  Even if it makes you look a bit older, so what?  You will definitely look better.  So just enjoy it.

The 30 day commitment to shaving is a real confidence builder.  So just take the razor to the dome and do the deed.

You will get lots of support from the bald brothers here, but I believe you will get support from the people you know at home and work as well.

I hope I can call you a "bald brother" soon.
