20 years ago I had long hair that was so thick I wished it would thin out. Boy, be careful of what you wish for! Gramps on my mom's side died when he was 86, full thick head of hair that was just starting to grey. Grams on the other hand had very thin hair. When I was younger I thought I got his genes but it definately didn't play out that way.
I cut my long hair in 97 or 98. A couple of years after that a barber noted that my hair was thinning as she was cutting my hair. I was surprised but sure enough when she held up a mirror to the top I could tell. So this was a long time coming. I tried Rogaine for a year when it started to thin... horrible stuff. Itchy scalp and makes your hair look clumpy. Couldn't be bothered with drugs or supplements and no way I was doing any comb overs. I told my wife there would come a time when it all goes.
I wear my hair short, #2 on the sides and a little longer on top. That helped for a long while in helping it from looking too thin. Going through pictures from the summer, I just did not like the way it was looking. The receding hairline made my forehead look huge and the birds nest from the behind shots were annoying too. I was due for another haircut, and was looking in the mirror last night I decided it was time to let it go.
I have some before and after shots and I do like it better gone. It will take some getting used to, mostly just because of the feel of it. I was surprised how much colder my head gets even though my hair is normally short. A good collection of hats is on hand so no worries there. Luckily all my Fedoras still fit fine. Now I just need the shaved part to be the same color as the rest of my head! I do have a bit of a peak at the top of my head but I expected that as I already noticed it when feeling my head. The rest of my head turned out better than I thought it would!
So for those on the fence, just do it. You can always grow it back.... well maybe.
(Sorry for the blurry pics, but you get the idea)
