OK! This may sound crazy!

I've  got a question, and I know it might sound crazy:D
when I was a kid, I used to see my dad shaving his beard! the surprise was that he wasn't using a foam/gel, he was using soap, with  a brush.
is that a crazy idea?

Crazy, nope.  That's the way it was done pre-pressurized can of shaving foam or gel.  The equipment was a cup with a cake of soap--often specially formulated for shaving, and some hot water on a brush--worked in the cup until a nice amount of lather was achieved.

But, Past is Future, you can still buy brushes and cake soap as well as many different styles of cup.  Many of the guys here, including myself, use Headslick but apply it with a hot wet brush and work up a lather on the dome.

Yup, my Dad used to heat water on the stove and pour it into a small basin and soap up using his cup and soap...then scrape his face with a straight razor. I remember later he used a double edge Gillette and shaving soap that he mixed with his brush, but it came in a tube....maybe Palmolive. I always though that he made a huge production out of just shaving.

With Headslick or a similar product, a shaving brush works up a great lather on the dome.  No need for a cup or mug!   But, yes, I remember my dad working up a lather in a shaving mug with brush.  BTW, the brush feels great on the dome and I think helps lift of the stubble.

get a brush and a mug,  put it in the sink w/ hot water while you shower.  Come out and you will have some nice hot lather.

I LOVE my mug and brush - lather is better, you can get it hot and the array of shaving soaps seems to be about endless.  You can use it with Headslick or try any number of other options for cake soap or creams.  I tend to put a small bit of Headslick into my mug on top of whatever soap I;m using (currently Ogalalla's Bay Rum and Sandalwood) also adda couple of drops of glycerin.  The mug/brush approach gives you control over the consistency and scents.   Can't imagine going back to foam in a can.  And for times when a brush isn't convenient an Arko Shave Stick is a great choice.

Ming is relatively indifferent to tools and methods.  Their product (clean dome) is what that counts.  Ming finds that almost any razor will be OK; that foam from a can is also OK.  But he will say nothing against Sly guys who favor this razor over that or this soap product over that.  My father was raised to shave with a throat-cutter straight razor; he shifted to injector blades, at about which point I became aware that men did this thing called "shaving," and enlisted in the discipline.

I guess I'm "old guard," but what I do and how I do it works fine.  Find whatever works for you, and either stick with it, or explore.  Hey! It's just hair.

         Right and we don't make a big production about head shaving.
