Coverage from the Cold
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:38:45 PM »
So it is my first fall being sly and the temperature is starting to dip. Is there any suggestions for head coverage. Is it safe just to wear a regular hat. How often would you suggest wearing it? I've known guys that have let their hair grow back out in the winter, but I definitely don't want to take that option. Appreciate any advice.

Head Blade sells a neat skully on their website. Any kind of knit cap is OK for cold protection. To me this is more a question of form vs function. I don't think it's as important to be stylish as it is to be warm.

Today is the first fall-like day I've experienced with my bald pate.  It was 45 degrees (14 C) when I left home.  I don't know what I was expecting, but it actually felt good walking outside.  Maybe because it was only a short walk to the car, but it didn't feel too cold.

I have a black skully made of polar tech material...like they wear in the Corps. It's very warm, doesn't itch and wicks moisture. I spent a cold winter in the PRC and wore it 24/7, it saved me. I ordered another in gray for this winter. I also like to wear a flat cap...cotton, wool and leather. They feel good and I like the look.

I'm probably a little twisted but I kind of like to feel the cold on my head. It reminds me I'm bald, because sometimes I forget :)

It rarely goes below 29 or 30 degrees here in mid-winter, but if I'm not going to be outdoors for long, I pretty much always have an unprotected head.

In my area we can get down to -30 in winters so I always got it covered. I have a flannel plaid style cap with ear flaps and a neck gaurd deal that folds down (think Elmer Fudd hat) plus a bunch of knit caps/beanies/skullies. Generally I start wearing them when it gets below the teens. I love walking outside after shaving and feeling my scalp tighten up with the cold air. Plus it looks really cool when you get out of the shower after shaving and walk outside into the cold with a steaming dome.

I just went out to buy a panini press (long story), and its quite cold and wet here this morning. While I was out, the heavens opened, the rain was bucketing down.

The cold and torrential raindrops hitting my head felt great :D

Thanks for the response guys. I guess I was a little concerned because I heard we lose the majority of our body heat through our head. I'm a hoodie kind of guy so I might stick with that (maybe wash the hoodie more often than when I wasn't sly). I might look into getting a toboggan. I'm just glad to hear from the response that I won't die from hypothermia if I don't cover my head if it is in the mid to low 50s (probably still will though just to be safe :) )

If I'm out for a long time (12hrs at work) I wear a knit cap, though down here (La.) we may have only about two weeks of the year at most where the temperature drops under 40 degrees. Otherwise I may wear a fitted cap and a hooded jacket if needed.
