Irene

How are those of you in the storm's path making out?  The worst of it seems to have passed through the Delaware Valley area, though there is a second band that is currently in DC on its way here at some point. So far it hasn't been nearly as bad as they predicted.  About half the rain they were calling for, and no power outages here, thank goodness.  I did have a minor amount of water leaking into my basement, which caused me some panic around 11:30 last night because the center of the storm had not yet arrived.  But if the next band is no worse than this one, we can consider ourselves very lucky indeed.  I hope the rest of you are making out as well.

Up here, about 11 miles from the MA/NH border, its very windy and very wet. Fortunately Irene has mostly petered out, and is now a tropical storm.  The eye will be passing west of here sometime this afternoon.

We did okay in my part of Northern NJ. A lot of rain, but the wind wasn't as bad as expected. We lost power at 4:00AM and got some water in the basement. We've been hooked up to a neighbor's generator since then to keep the sump going. Lost a tree in the front yard, but fortunately it as it fell, it missed the house and the neighbor's and landed in the open space on the lawn. It's like the Almighty gently nudged it in that direction. Right now, gentle rain and slight breezes.

Come and mostly gone.  The "mostly" means there are still some very brisk winds, but not of tree-felling caliber.  No trees fell in my neighborhood, but lots of leaves and twigs certainly did.

Our ace in the hole is that we are not located in an area that is below sea level and is not being protected by levees that can be breached...fortunately.

You forgot built by the US Corps and not designed appropriately--the Mississippi Gulf Coast had a hurricane, New Orleans was one of the biggest failures of engineering in history.
