1680x1050 is what I have mine set to. When someone is looking at it over my shoulder they say "How can you read that," but it works for me.
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

NO, you need 640x480. Then you can REALLY read it!  LOL.

Assuming an LCD/LED monitor, I always use whatever is native for the screen because that's what looks best. So, 1680x1050 on my desktop and 1366x768 on my laptop. My laptop screen is only 13" in size :P

Doesn't that make the text size look like chicken scratch.

Ronthejazzcat is correct.  Whatever is native to the screen your are using is the correct resolution.  I have a 24" and it is set to 1920 x 1080.  If you use something other than the native resolution, you can make text look bigger but you sacrifice a lot of clarity.  When choosing an alternate resolution, you also have to be sure to get the correct aspect ratio if you decide to change the resolution.  Otherwise the display will look stretched or shrunk.  This aspect ratio parameter will severely limit the alternate resolutions you can choose and still have everything look proportional.

If icons and texts are too small for you with the native resolution, you can try increasing the DPI setting.

My 24" Samsung LCD is at 1920 x 1200, its native resolution. My 14" laptop uses 1366 x 768.
