Change my mind?
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:50:42 AM »
I am seriously thinking about meds and maybe a HT. I just can't imagine myself bald, I just am not the type of guy who looks good bald!

When I look at all your sly photos you look great, I would not!

What should I do, any advice from people who have been in my situation?

Thanks.

And how can you be so sure of that? Everyone is their own worst critic. Step back and think objectively. Why would you be the only one who wouldn't look good sly?

Think hard before doing something that you will most certainly regret later. Drugs can make you impotent, and transplants will scar you.

Shaving will do nothing that cannot be easily undone.

I totally understand. I don't have a good bald head either, but covering it up with a combover or slick back was the worse of two bad options. Now at almost 30 days I like it.

Shave it clean and give it 30 days. Post a pic here before and after and let us encourage you!

REALLY!!!!!  ALL OF US have been there. Yeah, some of these guy's are really hot (and I'm a straight married man) but have serious man-crushes on some of these guys.

Many of us hate our own looks, many of us can't stand to hear ourselves on audio recording. but give it 30 days.

At the very least, post a before picture for us today so we can get an idea.  I seriously doubt you look bad.

The actor that was on the sit-com "yes dear" who was Jimmy named Mike O'Malley , he wore a hat 24/7 and I always wondered why.I even saw a pic of him at the Academy awards with a baseball cap.  THEN I saw him without one, he was bald and has a HUGE dent in his head, right in the front.  Must have been dropped as a baby. now he is always hat-free.  It will take something like a smack on the head to get it through that it's like a child getting a shot, you psych yourself up WAY too much. Just do it. I promise it won't traumatize you. IF it is really too horrible, which I'm sure it's not, you can grow it back and wear hats while it does. Please heed our advice here, we've all been where you are now.

Moggo, I think he meant, shave it and then post a pic.

Based upon that photo I cannot see any reason that you would look any less fine than the rest of us.

Seriously.

I am seriously thinking about meds and maybe a HT. I just can't imagine myself bald, I just am not the type of guy who looks good bald!

If the drugs and the HT are the way you really want to go then what I would encourage you to do is post lots of pics throughout the process and journal whatever, if any, effects the drugs have on libido and other systems. I mean, who knows, maybe HTs and drugs really are the best things and we just have a "bald wing extremist" mentality in here. I, for one, would be very interested in seeing and reading about whatever changes take place in your life once you get started. If there truly are negative consequences involved in the types of treatments you're thinking about then journaling them for the SBG crowd might make a real difference for any other newcomers who are thinking of going the HT/Drug route. So in that sense you would be the "coal mine canary". I think that your sacrifice would provide a valuable resource for future slys. Whatever you decide, brother, I support your decision.
BTW, you would look every bit as good and probably better in sly mode than I do. Just sayin'.

Thanks Buddha, the reverse psychology is working  :)

Don't really want to give myself health problems with drugs when there is no guarantee and no actual need!

As I said in the other thread, I was never confident with hair, so lack thereof should at least leave me level :)

Thanks.

Moggo.

If you are that much on the fence, you should ask yourself whether you really want to make a change.  Any change will result in some level of anxiety.  Ask yourself how much anxiety you can tolerate.

Going sly was a big change for many of us, yet what we experienced was that most of the anxiety and fear was completely in / on our own heads.  It's a little bit of a letdown when you realize you aren't the center of the universe, i.e., most people don't care what you do or look like or what hairstyle you have!  Once you realize that, sporting a bald pate is really easy.

Remember, bro, it's just a haircut. You can scrape the skull today and let it grow back tomorrow. I don't know if the side effects of the meds are reversible and the HT scars are horrendous and permanent. Plus, all you spend to go sly is about $15 for a Head Blade and another $7 for Head Slick. The other stuff=Skinny wallet!
But that being said my previous post stands.

I'd just like to add to this that anyone who is contemplating a hair transplant should shave his head first and live as a bald guy for a month or two.  You may be surprised at how much you end up liking the look.  Or you may decide it isn't for you but at least then you'll be making an informed decision.  LIke Buddha said, a headshave is reversable.  A hair transplant is not.

Hmm, I checked out your pic and I believe you would look just fine shaved.  As many have said here.  Give shaving a try.  After all it will grow back if you don't like it.  At least give it a try for the 30 days.
The other options will always be available to you, but honestly, I truly believe they are last resorts.

There are so many good things about being shaved.  It does feel really good feeling your smooth head after a shave.  These breeze flowing across the top of your head is delightful.  the feel of the warm sun is great (just remember the sunscreen :).  Never having a bad hair day is fantastic.

Geez, go for it!  :)

Well, just had my hair cut, #3 on the sides and back, #4 on top. Hardly being very brave but small steps I think :)

Looks weird, getting used to seeing more head through the hair than I'm used to. Next step will be buzzed all over #3.

Thanks for your support guys and gals :)

Just remember it only gets better.  You're going to jump in the "pool" someday, and we promise your only question when you finally go sly will be--"Why did I wait so long?"

I'd stay away from a hair transplant if I was you. What happens when the other areas to start to thin or fall out?

I'm a Norwood 3 and you can still style your hair in a way. I grow the top a bit longer and keep the sides shaved it actually gives an illusion of much more hair on top and it looks not too bad, if you keep it short and tidy.

Im ok with being bald too and I will go back to sly once I hit NW4 or more.
