New to site/bit of adive
« on: July 07, 2011, 12:01:44 PM »
Hey guys,

I am 24...soon 25 and have been losing my hair for about 3 years now. It has now reached a stage where it is noticable and am not too sure how to deal with it. I am quite self conscious of it and just have not learned how to accept it yet. I am not sure why I am am having such a hard time, I know many guys look great bald, i just don't know how i will look. Girls used to love me for my thick curly hair and am not sure how to be around them without it. I know it sounds very superficial, I just need to learn how to be more confident about it. How did you guys first deal with it? Any advice or comments would be great, thanks

Welcome!.

The fact is, none of us knew what we would look like bald. Some people here tried photo shopping their picture to guess, that never works.  Just do it.  Clip it down to a no-guard level, then take a new razor and light cream or gel and shave it off. Watch out for moles or creases, you will have some (probably) go slow and take it easy. then do the 30 day rule and you will  be AMAZED!. you will wonder (like most of us have) why you took so long. The girls will love it. It's a very popular look these days, thats why many guys and gals are BBC (bald by choice).  Post a picture here so we can all see the new look. READ AL THE POSTS HERE and know you might get some negative comments, but nobody's opinion of you means anything.  I really can't say enough how much better I feel than I did with hair.

good luck.

I didn't deal with going bald. I sported a rather dashing forward combover for a long time, secured in place by hairspray!

I wasn't ready to shave my head. A particularly bad hair cut left me with nothing to push over the bald bits, so I had no option, with work on the Monday. As soon as I had shaved it off and looked in the mirror, I knew I had made the right decision.

I don't know how bad your baldness is, but for me, I can do a lot more bald. I couldn't swim before, or go out in the rain - hell I couldn't even go out in the wind!!

The reality is though, quite a few people, once their skin has adjusted (with getting a tan on the white bits, and adjusted to shaving - It can hurt at first), they look awesome more often than not! :)

Levy, welcome to SBG.  First off, girls didn't love you for your thick hair, they loved your confidence and personality that happened to be attached to a body with curly hair.  Give the 30 day rule a try...so far it has worked for everyone that has tried it.

I agree with Tyler - try it for 30 days.  You grow to love the sly look and feel.  Also, the reaction from that I've gotten from women is very good.  They seem to find the smooth head really attractive.

I agree with Tyler as well. The girls love you for your personality. Your curly hair might have caught their eye at first, but that is not what sustains someone's interest in you. Definitely give the 30 day rule a shot!!

Welcome Levy, my advice would be to just go with it. All will be fine once you make the decision to accept it.
You will feel more confidence each day. Give it the thirty days as the guys suggested, and you'll see.

Welcome to the brotherhood!  I used to buzz my hair at a #1 since I was in grade school.  All through high school and my first years of college (I'm 20 now) girls loved to rub my hair... and I wasn't complaining, head rubs are awesome!  I was really worried how shaving my head completely would change the way girls see me.  I realized something, as much fun as it is getting head rubs all the time, it really wasn't meaningful in any way, its kind of like petting a dog...  ??? When I came back home for the summer after being away at school a few friends were kind of shocked, mostly the guys (they seemed to be more intrigued than anything else).  All the girls didn't really even seem to care at all, a few gave some positive comments.  Personally I feel like shaving my head kinda taps into my BA side  :x!  I feel like its a real confidence boost, and I think people can get a sense that I carry myself with a little chip on my shoulder.  (Although sometimes I feel like my eyebrows are now a little oversized, but I think we all tend to nit pick on ourselves more than anyone else.)

Anyways, I think you'll warm up to it after a couple shaves.  And if anyone questions you just say 'I decided to give it a try, and I like it.'  If you give off confidence they'll accept it, its your head and they don't have any other choice.  Also if you really dislike it after a trial period you can always grow it out again!

Hey Levy welcome to the site!

I'm 23 and was recently in the same shoes as you.
I made the decision to buzz it down when i first noticed thinning and then as things progressed i buzzed it down even further. Then around this time last year i went for the razor and did the deed.
I won't lie to you, It hurt as first. I couldn't believe i was having to shave my head at 22 years old to feel better about my thinning hair.. I thought 'Man young people like me shouldn't have to deal with this kinda sh*t!'
I now know that hair loss can begin at practically any age, even to someone in their teens..
The trick is to do the deed and then get out there, Don't hide away in indoors but get out in the sun and be recognized as someone who had a problem and dealt with it/moved on!
Keep busy and look to improve yourself in other departments, Whatever may have been bugging you whether it be your level of fitness or your inability to work basic math. In time you will most likely come to like your shaved head and it will no longer be a bother, You'll be too busy feeling good about yourself!

That last bit may have sounded somewhat lame but i assure you that things DO get better!
Stick around and make use of the site, There's a pool of useful info here to make your transgression that much easier ; )

How long did you go between buzzing and shaving with the razor?

In my experience, it's not being bald or having a great head of hair that women like. It's all about confidence. I had a few people joke with me when I shaved mine the first time, and a few girls I knew kept telling me to grow it back out, but I liked it so much better. Most of the girls I know love it, including the one I wound up marrying last year. I'm 25 myself, by the way. Best of luck!
