How do you guys avoid irratation on the back of your head?
« on: June 19, 2011, 11:29:37 AM »
I've been headshaving for about 3 months now and it's been a great decision vs using clippers.  I typically use a headblade or a DE.

Regardless of which i use i always get irritation on the back of my neck if i ever go against the grain.  Problem is....going with the grain on the back of my head typically doesn't get all that close....

anyone have any suggestions on technique or products i can use to reduce the irratation ?

Thanks very much.   :)

I use my face blade to shave the back of my neck and make sure to reapply shaving oil or shaving cream before shaving it.

I've had good luck with the exfoliators, specifically the Equate brand from WalMart. It seems to be similar to the St. Ives which costs about 3 times as much. I buy the medicated kind which has salicylic acid in it in addition to the crushed up almond shells or sand or whatever they put in as an abrasive. For some reason the acid calms my scalp down a little after shaving.
I also have an after shave which I prepare myself which contains mainly Witch Hazel. I add aloe gel (the good stuff) until it just starts to thicken a bit and Tea Tree Oil just until I can smell it in the mix.
Between these 2 I don't have any problems with irritation.

I use HB Head Shed a couple of days a week.  I had problems with bumps until I learned I was pressing too hard with my blade.  Now using less pressure and plenty of soap, I don't have as many problems.

Have you considered trying an electric. I have really good luck with my Panasonic. I used to get the worst break outs until I switched to an electric.
